Roadside Station Kawauchiko (道の駅 かわうち湖)

4.0

Michi no Eki Road Station

Located next to the Kawauchi Dam and Lake Kawauchi, considered one of the 100 most beautiful dam lakes in the country, this is the northernmost roadside station on the island of Honshu. The facility has a restaurant where you can eat keiran sweet bean paste-filled rice cakes and other local dishes as well as soba noodles and cuisine made with highland vegetables and other local ingredients. There's also an observatory and a shop selling local specialty products from Kawauchi Town. The surrounding area is maintained as a nature park called Lakeside Park built around Kawauchi Dam, and here you can enjoy beautifully seasonal natural scenery.

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori's fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
