This prefectural art museum sits on the Izura Coast—a scenic location in Ibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The interior presents materials and personal effects of Tenshin Okakura, the artist who moved the first section (painting section) of the original Nihon Bijutsu-in to Izura for work. There are special exhibits featuring modern Japanese paintings as well. You must see the Pacific Ocean from the observation lobby. Cafe and museum shop adjacent.

家内と五浦観光ホテルに宿泊した時は、ちょうど「旅するチバラキ -連作《水郷めぐり》の全貌-」が開催されていた。我らが住んでいるのは茨城県内常磐線最西端の「チバラキ」地区でこの企画展に興味を持った。結果的には私的には大成功な企画展だと思った。

「日本美術界に貢献した人」と言われてもいまいちピンと来なかったが、こちらに来て展示品や説明を見て偉大さをようやく理解できた。施設は綺麗で開放感があり、厳かな雰囲気さえ感じる。基本美術館の為、美術品を展示しているのは勿論だが、愛用品や手紙等も展示しており、博物館の側面もある。中でも(名前失念)相手を水面の月に例えて反論されている手紙のやり取りはいかにも文化人同士の言葉の応酬で、叙情的で興...
