Baigetsu-en (Matsuzaki Store)

Pastries
Located in the town of Matsuzaki in Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, Baigetsu-en is a venerable confectionary that has sold both Japanese and Western sweets since 1931. It is said to be the original home of one of Matsuzaki’s most famous sweets, Cherry Leaf Mochi. Consisting of mochi and sweet bean paste wrapped up in a leaf from a local cherry tree, this confection combines a salty flavor with a delicate sweetness as it melts in one’s mouth. Chohachi no Tatsu, a Japanese-style confection made by coating two layers of mochi in fine Wasanbon sugar, is also highly regarded. It also sells a wide variety of other sweets, including roll cakes, Monaka (bean jam between two crisp mochi wafers) and Kintsuba (gelatin covered with a rice batter).
