Shigetsuden Temple

Historical Monument
Shigetsuden Temple, a sutra library located at the Shuzenji Onsen in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is said to be the oldest wooden building in Izu. It was built as a family cemetery by Hojo Masako, the mother of Minamoto no Yoriie, the second shogun of Japan’s Kamakura shogunate who was assassinated at Shuzenji Onsen. Three restored Buddhist statues are enshrined in the temple. The main statue, the wooden sitting statue of Shaka Nyorai holding a lotus flower, which has been designated as a Cultural Property by the prefecture, has a very rare design known as the Zen sect style. On either side of this imposing icon sit Nio Guardian statues. In the grounds of Shigetsuden is the grave of Minamoto no Yoriie.
