Juwari Sarashina Soba Shinano

Soba / Udon

Located in Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture, this soba restaurant’s charm is its space which utilizes the warmth and quality of wood. They grind carefully selected domestic soba seeds into three different types, offering “sarashina soba” (first), “oraga soba” (second), and “inaka soba” (third) as piled soba (mori soba). There are limited quantities of “ishiusuhiki soba” which uses marunuki soba seeds ground in a stone mill. You can compare “sarashina soba” and “oraga soba” in the “aimori soba,” so it is popular, but the a la carte menu is also great, with tempura, and Japanese char and such available.

Another soba place where it is hard to get to unless youve hired a car. Very good quality soba and tempura. On par or even better than the near-by Sasakura. Recommended.

Nagano prefecture is an exciting mix of mountains, hot spring monkeys, and preserved Edo history. At the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano is one of the country’s most popular destinations, whether in winter for its snow sports and the much-loved Jigokudani Monkey Park or in the warmer months for discovering the undulating hills on foot. For fantastic Edo architecture, head to the Kiso Valley for a 60-kilometer stretch of quaint wooden buildings that marked the Nakasendo route 200 years ago.
