Lourdes Cave

Other Historic Site/Building
A statue of the Virgin Mary, standing in the grounds of the Trappist Monastery, the first male Catholic monastery in Japan. The statue is enshrined in a carved rock face, recreating the Lourdes Cave, a French pilgrimage site. While making your way along the undulating mountain path to the cave you can enjoy the avenues of poplar and cedar trees and scenery unique to Hokkaido. The site of the cave is also famous as an observatory and on a fine day you may be able to see across the ocean to Mt. Hakodate or Aomori prefecture.
