Shiryokaku
This is a nationally designated historic site located about three kilometers north of Goryokaku and about a one-minute walk from Shiryokaku bus stop. As the name suggests, it looks like a butterfly shape when viewed from above. The site has an area of about 20,000 square meters, and toilets and drinking fountains can be used in all seasons except in the winter. It is said that it was built by soldiers of the former Tokugawa shogunate during the Battle of Hakodate in 1869, to overlook Hakodate city and protect the Toshogu shrine. The designer is not specified, but there is a theory that it was Keisuke Otori, the army magistrate of the time. Other than the monument, cherry blossoms can be seen in spring.
