Doi Shibazuke Honpo Kiyomizu Shop

Other Food
This pickle shop is found on the pilgrimage path to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Ever since its founding in 1901, it has carried on the traditional flavors of Shibazuke pickling of the village of Ohara. Their most popular product is Doi no Shibazuke, which includes summer vegetables like eggplants, cucumbers, and myoga Japanese ginger preserved with Ohara's own red crepe shiso (perilla) leaves. The delicate sourness, created by natural lactic fermentation, is a mark of pride for the shop. They also have a variety of other Kyoto pickles, including the famous Senmaizuke sliced turnip, hannari zuke eggplant with the flavor of savory kombu kelp, and crisp sour-sweet shisozuke daikon. The shop also offers soft-serve ice cream and smoothies to take on your walk up the hill.
