"A one-minute walk from the ""Kawaramachi Marutamachi"" bus stop and a seven-minute walk from Marutamachi Station. This Shinto shrine can be reached by heading east from the Kyoto Imperial Palace on Marutamachi-dori Street and taking a left at Teramachi-dori Street. The shrine is believed to have been established in the early Heian period to enshrine Hasho Goryo. The shrine was moved to its current location in 1590 per the organization of shrines and temples implemented by the mighty samurai lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During the Kankosai festival held from mid- to late May each year, a portable shrine and carriage called a ""shinkoretsu"" tour the area; on the festival eve the day before, the portable shrine is also excitingly carried by some 300 local elementary school students. During the Umenagomi festival in March, visitors can enjoy the sight of double-flowering plum trees blooming on the grounds."

正月の飾り付けの松などを撤去中に参詣しましたが・・・

今年も又、すぐ南側にある革堂行願寺への年初の都七福神巡りで参拝した帰路のついで詣り、失礼だが、わざわざここだけのために来る予定は今後も過去も無い。一番酷かった南側の土塀は修復されているが、やはりまだ土塀には傷みや劣化が目立つ。それと、神職の人だが、きょう日はどこの寺社でも参詣者、参拝者と出会うと「よくお参り」とか何とか声を掛けて来るものだが、ここだけは相変わらず無言で・・・来る者が「お客さん」とか...
初詣の準備が進む大晦日

大晦日の朝に参拝したところ初詣の準備が進んでいました。飾付けや看板も取付られ、多くの観光客等が初詣に訪れる神社とは異なりますが、近隣の方々をお迎えするようでした。
令和四年春期京都非公開文化財特別公開。公開は2022年４月23日〜5月15日迄で、受付時間は9:00〜16:00、拝観料は大人1,000円です。

下御霊神社は、平安時代の人々は非業な死をとげた人物は怨霊となり、天災や疫病を引き起こすと考えていました。そこで御霊をなぐさめ、鎮めるために早良親王など八座が祀られています。
