Shiroyama Park
A park built on a 107-meter-high hill in the heart of the city. The park is dotted with historic sites connected to the Satsuma Rebellion, including the location of the rebellion’s last bloody battle, Saigo Takamori’s Hideout, and the Place of Saigo Takamori’s Death. The land was designated a National Historic Site and Natural Monument in 1931 and opened as a scenic park in 1964. The park grounds are a natural treasure trove, and over 600 varieties of temperate and subtropical trees and plants grow thickly within its borders, including giant camphor, ferns, and sweet viburnum. Visitors can also enjoy the park’s walking paths and come in contact with natural beauty.
