Temple No. 9, Horinji Temple
A Buddhist temple and located on Mt. Arashi, a Place of Scenic Beauty, in Nishikyo Ward in Kyoto City. The principle object of worship, a figure of Akasagarbha, is popularly known as “Saga no Kokuzo-san.” The temple was founded by the priest Gyoki at the request of Empress Genmei in 713. Dedicated to wisdom, the performing arts, and protecting those born in the year of the Ox, the temple is famous for the “Jusan Mairi,” an event in which boys and girls aged 13 years old according to the old way of reckoning visit the temple in order to be blessed with intelligence and fortune. A traditional memorial service for old needles is held at the temple on December 8 which gathers used sewing needles from around the country. The grounds also contain the Dendengu, a shrine dedicated to electrically-related industries.
