- Imayotsukasa is a charming old style sake brewery only 15 minutes walk from Niigata Station. The half hour brewery tour is free and you don't need to be in a group to join. The guides not only explain the sake making process, but they also share the history of the local area as well. After the tour, you get to taste more than 10 different types of sake. You can reserve a tour in English on the company's website. A bottle of the elegantly packaged Nishikigoi sake makes for the perfect souvenir.

- The delicious water of Niigata's Agano River is not only used to make sake. This is not far from Niigata Station is the Nuttari Beer Brewery. The craft beer made here contains only European malts and is produced without heating or filtration. Try a glass or two of IPA, Pale Ale of Weitzen, at the Nuttari Beer Pub next to the brewery.

- Nuttari Terrace (a Showa era shopping district that has been transformed into an area of hip stores, eateries, and cafés) has become one of Niigata's most popular attractions. There are some 30 independently run businesses in total, including a shoe repair shop that doubles as a craft beer bar, a used furniture and clothes store, and Hoshino koffee & Labo, which is an artisanal coffee shop and café. Nuttari Terrace is the ideal place to spend an unhurried few hours strolling around and peeking into the unique shops.

- Benkei, one of Niigata's most famous sushi restaurants, is based on Sado island but has an outlet at the Pier Bandai fresh food market in Niigata city. For a conveyor belt sushi bar, the quality here is outstanding. The dried squid, a Sado delicacy, is the perfect match for a glass or two of Niigata sake.
