The iconic red gate in Shinjuku could be considered as the symbol of Kabukicho (the area’s entertainment district), with Godzilla breathing fire every passing hour. Kabukicho has been one of the busiest sightseeing locations for years now, and it’s not stopping anytime soon. There is, however, a new addition to the multitude of things to do in Kabukicho. The Tokyo Matrix is the latest, groundbreaking experience for lovers of games and animation.

    What is The Tokyo Matrix?

The Tokyo Matrix is situated on the fourth floor of the recently erected Tokyu Kabukicho Tower where visitors are encouraged to master what they love, and for some, to take their passions to new heights. The Tokyo Matrix is one such activity and experience: a virtual game experience anime fans and gamers can most certainly enjoy during their time in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Matrix is a life-size mystery dungeon that is over 1,500m in size, where players participate in a group with two to three players where they are required to solve fast-paced puzzles and games. These games require inspiration and critical thinking to successfully clear each phase within the time limit to move, successfully, onto the next level and escape the dungeon, ensuring they clear and pass all the games.

    How to Play

Participants don’t need to bring much to play at the Tokyo Matrix, just yourself and two to three people to join the game. Visitors can reserve in advance but also on the day of purchasing day tickets. Before playing, visitors need to register an account and charge their “Topolo”currency which is used to purchase tickets and digital items within the facility.

Each player is given a device which becomes a sword used to defeat monsters and deadly enemies and also as a key to the different rooms in the dungeon. Hold on tight to your sword and enter the digital transport portal with your team which will transport you into the dungeon.

Are You Ready for the Quests?

There are a total of five quests to clear in order to beat the dungeon. Currently, the contents of the quests are based on the popular Japanese anime series Sword Art Online. Fans of the series can fight alongside their favorite characters throughout the dungeon experience. All of the games and their explanations are set to your first language beforehand during registration, so visitors who are not comfortable in Japanese can understand perfectly. The level of each quest increases in difficulty as you venture deeper into the dungeon.

In the opening quest, players have to put their sword skills to the test. A guerrilla attack of monsters awaits and players need to obtain sheet music or other items. Players can swing their sword device like a real sword and depending on how much time is taken before they swing the sword, players can utilize different exciting techniques.

In the second quest, players have to work together and walk through the long, winding hallways of the dungeon in order to find the correct answer to each number puzzle on different colored maps. The puzzles are tricky as players will meet various obstacles on their way while on the lookout for the correct answer and the next map.

Players who pass the second quest are able to enter the third stage in which they are told to enter three random rooms out of eight. In each room awaits a different Sword Art Online character who needs the players’ help in breaking through the traps in the rooms. All the traps need to be reset before time runs out.

In the fourth quest, players will again be ambushed by multiple monsters surrounding a large trap which players need to fight and win in order to survive.
In the last and final quest, players face off in a duel with Kirito and Asuna. Once players win against Kirito and Asuna, victory is theirs and theirs alone!

A New Adventure Awaits You on Every Visit

Most players, however, are unable to break through past the third quest. The most intriguing part of the Tokyo Matrix is that each time players encounter different games and characters, each visit to the Tokyo Matrix is something different from the one before.

Even visitors who don’t enter the dungeon can watch the scoreboard and cheer on their friends and family from outside, much like a game tournament display setup. It is as much fun watching friends go through the quests in the dungeon in real time.

Experience a new adventure and challenge yourself and your team to pass all of the quests. The Tokyo Matrix, then, is incredibly rewarding and will have you coming back for more and more unique experiences.
