When deciding to come to Japan at any time of year, one of the hardest choices to make is where to go. With the Japan Travel by Navitime app you can easily save locations and group them as individual collections, and then create detailed travel plans from those collections. This feature is particularly good if you know the types of places you would like to go but haven’t yet narrowed down your selection - like a week-long trip to the snow.

There are so many ski resorts in Japan, it can be hard to decide which ones to go to as they all vary in size, accessibility, and difficulty of runs. During the research phase of my trip, once I found a ski resort that looked good, I searched for the location in the Japan Travel by Navitime app, and then added it to my custom ‘Ski Resorts’ collection.

On this trip to the snow, I have decided to stay around the Niigata area as there are a lot of large resorts within an hour or two drive, so if one resort gets a big dump of snow overnight we can drive there early the next day. My favourite resorts in this area are Shiga Kogen, Kagura and Naeba, Myoko Suginohara, Nozawa Onsen, and Hakuba. You can view the saved locations as a list, or by clicking on the map icon you can see where they are located relative to each other.

Other collections I have created are ‘Ski in ski out hotels’, as there are lots of places where you can stay and then hit the slopes without having to get a bus or even walk to the lift, and ‘Onsen’ that are in the areas I am planning to stay.

With the free version of the app you can create up to three collections and travel plans, but if you upgrade to the Full-Featured Plan you can create up to fifty collections and travel plans. You could have collections for each town/city you are travelling to, as well as where to eat, and what to do there. These collections and travel plans are also easy to share with friends, and can be exported as text so you can print them out.

Once you have finalized the details of the trip, you can add the locations as well as where you will be staying to the trip plan, and click on the map icon to see the route map. The Full-Featured Plan also includes alternate routes and voice navigation so you can get to your destination quickly and easily.

Once you are up at the snow, you can track the current weather and snowfall (or rain) at the locations in your collection with the weather layer, and with the Full-Featured Plan you can and see what the weather will be like up to six hours in the future. Tickets for the Full-Featured Plan are 480 yen for the 30-day ticket, and 4,000 yen for a year-long pass.
