Located on the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, Tateyama City is a popular destination for day trip travelers from Tokyo, and water sports enthusiasts drawn to the city’s warm climes no matter the season.
For water sports enthusiasts and beachgoers, Tateyama is one of the top choices in this part of Chiba. The city boasts numerous beaches, and thanks to its favourable location, one can choose from surfing the waves of Heisaura Bay on the Pacific side, or take pleasure in the calm and clear waters of the sandy patches on the Tokyo Bay side. Every year in August, crowds gather around Hojo Beach to take in the huge fireworks display which can be seen from miles away on a clear night.
Tateyama is a popular summer destination, and is dotted with seaside hotels and summer houses, with the prefered water activities including fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving by the rocky coastline. Of course, being a coastal city, you can expect to dine on fresh seafood. There are plenty of restaurants serving up local specialties such as grilled abalone, namerou, and an array of sashimi, with Nagisa Cafeteria and Daibo being must try locations. A lesser known feature of the city is also the fact that various kinds of fruits are harvested not far from the shore, with strawberries, figs, and melons all being grown in Tateyama.
While water sports and beaches are popular, Tateyama is also host to a number of noteworthy attractions. Visit the reconstructed Tateyama castle, originally built to guard entry to the bay. The views from the top are certainly a sight to behold, stretching for miles beyond Tateyama bay. Tateyama is home to the stunning Boso Flower Line, a scenic driving route that, as early as February, is adorned by beautiful flowers along Heisaura Bay.
En-route, the Flower Line attractions like Okinoshima Island, Sunosaki Lighthouse, and the Aloha Garden, are sure to give you a fun-filled day. The historic Awa Shrine, also on the Heaisaura Bay side of Tateyama, is one of the oldest and highest ranked shrines in Japan, and definitely a must-see while exploring the city. Spring is the best time to see the Flower Line in full bloom, but the drive is scenic any time of the year.
Surrounded by plenty of nature, the golden sands of its beaches, clear blue water, and beautiful views, this picturesque area is less than two hours from the bright lights of Tokyo and is a well-rounded destination when traveling to Chiba Prefecture.- 館山なぎさ食堂
