What to Do in Obihiro

As the only official city in the Tokachi region, Obihiro is home to the majority of the area’s tourist attractions. While the surrounding greenery naturally gives the city a peaceful ambience, its quirky activities add a little more excitement to fill up your days discovering the city’s little streets.

    Midorigaoka Park

Just south of Obihiro Station, Midorigaoka Park is a spacious park filled with greenery, a beautiful array of trees, and a lake offering rowing boats. Like all well thought out Japanese gardens, the park’s trees transform with the seasons from the vibrant red and orange of hues of autumn to the pastel pink and white cherry blossoms in spring. Also home to the Hokkaidoritsu Obihiro Museum art gallery, Obihiro Zoo, and the Obihiro Centennial Hall, the park is a good spot for taking a relaxing stroll or setting up for a picnic.

Located in the heart of the Tokachi region, Obihiro has always played an important role in the history and culture of Tokachi. The Obihiro Centennial Hall found in the Midorigaoka Park and open between 9am and 5pm exhibits a wide variety of artifacts, replicas, and information for a deep insight into the way life in the region has changed throughout the centuries. From the days when wooly mammoths roamed freely in Hokkaido to the developments of ancient civilisations such as those from the Jomon Era (14,000 - 300 BC), the museum promises an informative visit for just 380 yen for adults or 190 yen for high school students and younger and over 65s.

North of the station, the Obihiro Shrine is an easy stop off on a trip through town. Moved to Obihiro in 1883 during the Meiji Period, the shrine features a number of buildings with unusual architecture. A smaller shrine was built next to the main shrine in 1890 as well as an impressive entrance gate protecting the peaceful grounds.

    Obihiro Banei Horse Racing

Unlike your standard horse racing track, the horses seen at Obihiro Banei racecourse are strong and chunky horses bred to pull heavy iron sleds. Weighing up to half a ton, the sleds are then mounted by riders who keep the horses going from behind. With a usual horserace betting system in place, anyone can turn up and vote on their winning horse. Alternatively, come early in the morning to check out the vigorous training sessions that the horses and riders conduct on the grounds.
