Where to Eat in Marunouchi Tokyo Station

When it comes to dining, Marunouchi has a pretty upscale image in Tokyo.

There are plenty of expensive restaurants in the area, but if you know where to look you can strike a pretty good balance between being frugal and spoiling yourself a little.

    Tokyo Ramen Street

The shopping center in the basement of Tokyo Station is a collection of 100 shops and restaurants. If you follow the signs correctly, you’ll come to underground alley dedicated to ramen.

Established in 2009 in the First Avenue Tokyo Station shopping mall, Tokyo Ramen Street will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on June 17, 2019.

The Street was established with only with four stores - Rokurinsha, Hirugao, Mutsumiya, and Keisuke. These were select after thorough research, which included visiting over 100 ramen restaurants in Tokyo, checking their tidiness and the motivation of employees in every single store.

Since adding four more stores in 2011, the street has continued to introduce various ideas in order to attract more customers (especially women and families) and widen the base of ramen fans.

After several changes to the store lineup, Tokyo Ramen Street is now home to the eight greatest ramen stores in Tokyo as of 2019 - Gyoku, Soranoiro, Rokurinsha, Oreshiki Jun, Hirugao, Tsujita Misono Sho, Chiyogami, and Ikaruga.

These shops popular with salarymen, shinkansen travelers, and ramen enthusiasts in general. Each shop is quite different so you can choose a new type of ramen every time you pass through the station. One thing to keep in mind: because these shops are so good and the station is so busy, if you go at lunch or dinner time you should expect to wait in line.

    Shin-Marunouchi Building

It’s not really possible to recommend a single restaurant in this 38 story building, but the many restaurants on floors 5-7 have amazing food and views of the city, especially Tokyo Station which is just across the street. Pretty much any kind of food you can imagine is available, and at any price point. Definitely recommended in the evening as there’s a lively atmosphere, and it’s perfect for couples looking for a more cosmopolitan date night.

On the 7th floor of the building is Marunouchi House, stylish space that’s home to 9 particularly trendy restaurants and bars, plus a library space. The cuisine is varied, with options like Italian, Chinese, or soba noodles, as well as a chic wine bar and cafe for those who arrive looking for a drink.

Marunouchi House is open until 4 a.m. everyday except Sunday, when it closes at 11 p.m. There’s even a terrace that offers amazing views of the city, including the Tokyo Station building, without all the crowds pressing in for pictures.

    Matsudo Tomita Menban

Matsudo Tomita Menban is set on the B1 floor of the KITTE Marunouchi building, in Ramen Gekisen-ku. The owner’s pedigree is impressive, to say the least. His shop in Chiba has won the Best Tsukemen in Japan award and been featured in Tokyo Ramen of the Year, so you should expect nothing less than excellence.

All those accolades do mean that people will be lining up, though, even on weekdays, for Matsudo Tomita Menban—his first shop in Tokyo. The Noukou Tsukemen (noodles that you dip into the soup on the side) offers a thick soup that’s complemented by the chashu pork and chewy noodles. See for yourself what the fuss is all about.

    Machimura Farm - soft cream

As the only Machimura Farm shop in Tokyo directly managed by the company, sweet lovers will definitely want to stop by the Marunouchi location. Aside from the delectable list of puddings, cakes, and cookies, Machimura Farm does an excellent soft cream.

You can buy the soft serve in a waffle cone or a cup, and toppings like strawberries and matcha add an extra layer of decadence. The cozy shop has a modest dining area, as well, so pick a treat and dig in. There are special items only available at the Marunouchi location, so be on the lookout for those, too!

    Mary’s Café

    Mary’s Café

The sole cafe of the long-standing chocolatier, Mary’s is set right next to the first floor entrance of the KITTE building. Inside, the glass counter is lined with luscious chocolate medallions of various flavors, but take advantage of the cafe menu this location offers.

The Chocolate Mousse is a chilled chocolate drink topped with a rich mousse; it’s a decadent treat that can also be taken to-go. But the seating area is an open space that allows plenty of natural light, in case you decide to order a few things and take your time with your treats.

Food Trucks at the International Forum

Between the two wings of the Forum, there’s cozy plaza that hosts an ever-changing array of food trucks. Some shops we’ve spotted over the years are Japanese curry, Thai curry, Indian curry, Korean food, Haitian food, rotisserie chicken, customizable salads, pizza, paella, and many more.

Perfect for when you want to eat outdoors (a rarity in Tokyo), and it’s fun to browse the trucks and pick a bench to sit where you can enjoy the Forum’s architecture. If you happen to be in town the second week of October, this same location is one of four venues for the Taste of Tokyo festival which means you’ll have even more choices!

    Sembikiya KITTE

When you visit KITTE in the old Central Japan Post building, don’t miss out on this cafe operated by the super high-end fruit purveyor since 1834, Sembikiya. Japan’s oldest fruit shop, this is where you can find Japan’s infamous $200 musk melons and a wide variety of perfectly curated fruits that taste incredible, but come with incredible prices too. Luckily you don’t need to buy a whole melon, but can get a taste of the world’s best fruit in the cafe along with some coffee during a break.

    Cafe 1894

    Cafe 1894

    Cafe 1894

Housed in what used to be a bank during the Meiji Period, this cafe is perfect any time of day as they have nicely-presented meals made with Tokyo-grown vegetables, but you can also just pop in for a coffee or a cocktail until 11pm.

The interior is a well-maintained restoration of the original bank, including teller windows at the bar, making for a rare atmosphere these days in a city where these sorts of places often get torn down over the years.

It’s also connected to the Mitsubishi Ichigokan museum, so it’s a perfect combination trip.
