Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018, the Goto Islands in the East China Sea are set to lure visitors from both Japan and abroad to discover their spec-tacular coastal scenery, fascinating history and Christian landmarks. As Christianity was banned by the Tokugawa Shogunate from the 17th to 19th centuries, persecuted Christians moved from Nagasaki to these remote islands where they continued to practice their religion in secret.
