Smart Exchange are exchange machines that can be found throughout Shinjuku, with the advantage being that you can change money even at midnight when many money exchange offices are closed.

Galireo Currency Exchange has a counter that’s just a two-minute walk from the JR Shinjuku Station’s East Exit and easily accessed from the Shinjuku-sanchome Station by the underpass. Simply go down the stairs at the B10 Exit and walk straight ahead. You’ll see it on the right-hand side.

J-Market
J-Market has four stores around Shinjuku that handle foreign currency exchange, as well as selling train tickets for the Yamanote Line and Shinkansen bullet trains. They’re open longer hours than most banks and exchange a total of 13 currencies, including US Dollars, Euros, British Pounds and Australian Dollars. You can also exchange Chinese Yuan, Korean Won, Hong Kong Dollar and Thai Baht, as well as Canadian Dollars, Swiss Francs, Taiwan Dollars, New Zealand Dollars and Singapore Dollars.

If you’re changing an obscure currency, then Exchangers is a good place to head as they handle more than 150 different currencies (the largest number in Japan) and they’re known for offering very good rates. For currency exchanges of less than two million yen, they don’t require you to show ID, so you don’t have to carry your passport with you.

The Exchangers Shinjuku Kabukicho store is situated in the Shinjuku NOA Building along Yasukuni Street, between the Shinjuku ward office building and the SHIDAX karaoke shop. Keep an eye out for the Mr Donuts shop and you’ll find it! Aside from their currency exchange service, there are also gashapon toy vending machines and a stationery department where you can pick up supplies.

Omotenashi Money Exchange is a convenient option if you’re using the Seibu Shinjuku Station as it’s located on the 5th floor of a building that’s directly in front of the North Exit. They offer competitive rates for US Dollars, Euros, Chinese, Korean Won and British Pounds, as well as Australian Dollars, Taiwan Dollars, Hong Kong Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Singapore Dollars and Philippine Pesos.
Aside from their currency exchange services, they also have a Wi-Fi rental service, which costs 486 yen for up to 12 hours. There’s a maximum capacity of 10GB and it can only be used within Japan.

Sakura Exchange is another currency exchange operator with a branch in Kabukicho that’s renowned for its excellent rates. When selling your own foreign currency, you need a copy of your ID and they are open for extended hours when compared to banks and some other currency exchange counters.
To reach the Sakura Exchange Kabukicho store, simply leave JR Shinjuku Station from the East Exit and walk towards Kabukicho. Before you reach the TOHO Cinemas, turn left and continue straight ahead until you see Sakura Exchange on your right.
