    Miyazaki Pref. Kushimashi Ono Ozaki
A small peninsula on which Japanese horses, also known as Misaki horses, graze. The horses leisurely feed on the peninsula’s grasses against a backdrop of gently rolling green hills and the blue sea, creating a beautiful and tranquil scene. The lighthouse standing on the tip of the peninsula is the southernmost lighthouse in Miyazaki Prefecture. The only lighthouse which can be entered and viewed by tourists in Kyushu, it also serves as viewing platform from which visitors can get a sweeping view of the surrounding gentle ocean.
  • Horikawa Canal

    Miyazaki Nichinan-shi Nishimachi 7
This canal connects the mouth of the Hiroto River to Aburatsu Port. The canal, built on the order of Obi Domain lord Ito Sukezane in 1686, took around two years to complete. Aburatsu has flourished since ancient times as a key port. The canal was built by Obi Domain to efficiently transport Obi cedar and serves as a symbol of Aburatsu. At the time it was built, canal excavation was no easy task, and it is said that digging out the bedrock below the vicinity of Ahiratsu Shrine was particularly difficult. The canal is about a 15-minute walk from Aburatsu Station. Today, the canal is used as a shooting location for movies, and as a shelter for fishing boats during typhoons.

An unmissable highlight of Kyushu, Miyazaki prefecture satisfies nature lovers with its dramatic gorges cut out of rugged cliffs, leading into waterfalls and beaches of green-blue water popular among surfers. Takachiho Gorge in the north of the prefecture tells a tale of centuries-old Japanese mythology in a fantastic setting, allowing visitors to explore the waters by boat before heading up to the cave at the Awano Iwato Shrine, where the sun goddess was said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness.
