    Hiroshima Pref. Kureshi Shimizu 1-9-36
"A Shinto shrine located in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Viewed as the patron shrine of Kure City, this Hachiman shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Chuai. Located on a hill, visitors to the grounds can enjoy a sweeping view of Kure Bay. The shrine's grand Yabu festival is famous for its abundance of participants, leading to its nickname as the ""people festival."" During the festival, shrine parishioners carry a portable shrine with a straw barrel filled with new rice; meanwhile, messengers of the goods called ""Yabu"" poke and prod the barrel with bamboo poles, attempting to delay the parishioners. The contest between the parishioners and Yabu can last hours."

  • Mitate-jinja Shrine

    Hiroshima Pref. Higashihiroshimashi Saijouchousaijou 268
A Shinto shrine standing in lush Mitate Park a five minute walk from Saijo Station. A Gion shrine was built in the area dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-mikoto, worshipped for providing healing from illness, when a plague was sweeping the land in 706. Thereafter, through merging with other nearby shrines, Mitate-jinja Shrine was ultimately moved here. There is a “Matsuo-jinja Shrine” on the shrines grounds whose enshrined deity was ritually divided from the one in Matsuo-jinja Shrine in Kyoto; the shrine is renowned for the blessings it is believed to provide in matters relating to sake. Mitate-jinja Shrine front shrine contains numerous sake casks donated to the shrine by local sake makers.

    Hiroshima Kure-shi Kurahashicho Sainoki 423
This ancient Shinto shrine is situated on a hill overlooking the coast and pines of Katsurahama, selected for inclusion in a list of Japan’s 100 most beautiful stretches of sandy beach and green pine. The shrine is dedicated to the three Munakata Sanjo-shin goddesses who protect those who work on the sea, and the three Usa YahataHachiman gods of military commanders. The main shrine, rebuilt in 1489, is constructed in the nagare-zukuri style with three bays and a front room space. The shingled roof is said to have been installed in its current form in 1499. Primarily made of wood, the shrine’s design is simple yet features several touches which are largely not seen in other shrines in the prefecture, such as the use of round columns even for the eave pillars, and it has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.
  • Tenmangu Shrine

    Hiroshima Kure-shi Yutakamachi Mitarai
This area on the eastern edge of Osaki Shimo-jima Island is called Mitarai and it served as a secret trading port between Hiroshima Domain and Satsuma Domain at the end of the Edo period. It is said that this Tenmangu shrine was established when a government official from Hiroshima Domain, Funakoshi Juzaemon, donated funds to build a shrine in 1871. According to legend, the great scholar Sugawara no Michizane visited the shrine when he was demoted to a minor post in Dazaifu and washed his hands using the Hongawa Well behind the shrine, and some say this is the origin of the area’s name, which literally translates to “hand washing.”

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
