This is a shrine in Kamogami, Gose City. This is the grand main shrine of all the Kamosha Shrines nationwide, and one of the oldest shrines in Japan. The main shrine was rebuilt in the Muromachi period in a Sangensya nagare-zukuri architectural style, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. There are also engravings of Kaikei's inscriptions on the guardian dogs in front of the main shrine. The precinct is home to west and east auxiliary shrines, and many other smaller shrines in the precinct as well.

    Nara Kitakatsuragi-gun Kawaicho Kawai 99
A shrine in Kawai, Kawai Town, Kitakatsuragi County. Located at the confluence of all of the rivers of the Nara Basin, it enshrines the deity Wakaukanome-no-Mikoto, who controls large harvests and water. On February 11th they hold the unusual Sunakake Festival in which sand is flung about like rain over the observers.

    Nara Pref. Yamatokoriyamashi Tousenjichou 15
One of the main three Inari deity shrines of Japan, this shrine is the protective shrine of Mt. Kori, enshrining Hidenaga, the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The legend behind the name of the shrine, Genkuro, recounts that when Minamoto-no Yoshitsune fought with his older brother, Yoritomo, he was helped by the Inari god many times. In the main sanctum the white fox deity, Byakko Genkuro is enshrined. Where other shrines have guard dogs, this shrine is protected by guard foxes at its entryway. Endeared deeply by the locals, this shrine hosts many seasonal events.

"This Shinto shrine appears to have been built in the Yakusoen medicinal herb garden which once existed in the south of Heijo-kyo, the capital of Japan in the Nara period. The current main shrine building; which records state was reconstructed in the Momoyama period, is a single bay shrine built in the Kasuga-zukuri style with hinoki bark thatching. Of particular note is that the shrine retains its vivid coloring; its carvings and gilded fixtures also convey a distinctive, showy air. The main shrine building has been designated a Cultural Property by the prefecture. There is a medicinal herb specimen garden on the grounds which contains more than 50 varieties of herbs. Locals call the shrine ""Yako-san."""

    Nara Gose-shi Miyamaecho 514
This Shinto shrine was the family shrine of the powerful Kamo clan during the reign of Emperor Sujin. Alongside Takagamo Shrine, it is thought by some to be the progenitor of the many Kamo shrines which dot Japan. The shrine's grounds are also a Yayoi period archeological site, and numerous pieces of pottery, stone tools, and other artefacts have been dug up on them. Two days before Health and Sports day on July 16 each year, the shrine holds a massive lantern procession which is the largest of the several such processions which are held in southern Nara Prefecture.

There is no main shrine building at this shrine as it is believed that Mt. Hakuun in the background is the deity spirit. "This Shinto shrine is dedicated to Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, an Asuka period imperial court poet with over 400 poems included in the ancient ""Man'yoshu"" and ""Kokin Wakashu"" poetry anthologies. Some of the many highlights on the grounds include a fudegaki persimmon tree which produces brush-like ears in the fall, a cherry tree said to have grown from a left behind walking stick, a double-blossomed plum tree, and monuments inscribed with the poet's poems. The shrine is famous for its annual spring festival held on the second Sunday in April."

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
