A museum located inside Marine Town in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture which presents traditional kiriko votive lanterns from the Noto area. During festivals in summer and fall, shrine parishioners in every town in the area carry kiriko lanterns; the largest can rival four story buildings in size. Some 30 giant kiriko lanterns stand within the hall; traditional festival music plays inside the museum, and lighting is used to recreate the atmospheres of festivals being held during the day, at dusk, and in the evening. The viewing deck on the third floor gives a sweeping view of Wajima Port. The museum also has a shop selling original merchandise.

This museum is off the beaten path, but it is well worth finding it and investing an hour or so wandering through the amazing lanterns. The price is affordable, about JPY600/person, and colors and...

A museum dedicated to Wajima lacquerware located near the Shinbashi Bridge in the heart of Wajima. The museum was recently remodeled in 2015. Inside its bright and spacious confines, visitors can view many examples of Wajima lacquerware. There is a gallery and shop on the first floor which sells lacquerware products from some 60 artisans and shops in the city. The shop's large selection spans items for everyday use like lacquered chopsticks, to gorgeously painted decorative lacquerware pieces. The second floor exhibition space has two rooms. The first exhibition room presents how lacquerware is made. The second exhibition room conveys the depths of Wajima lacquerware, presenting the history and culture of the craft, examples of the lacquering process, and historical materials.

We stopped at this small museum while visiting Wajima. The museum has some very nice displays of laquerware and also does a nice job of explaining how these pieces are made. This is worth a stop if...

A museum dedicated to sharing the work and achievements of Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture-born manga comic artist Go Nagai. The distinctive Japanese-style museum building is decorated with large panels featuring characters created by Nagai such as Devilman and Cutie Honey. Inside, visitors are greeted by countless examples of Nagai's dynamic artwork. In addition to informational panels discussing Nagai's life and rare original drawings, the museum is also decorated with a 1/9th scale Mazinger Z. The museum also has slightly unusual exhibits, like the Dark Hero Labyrinth, in which heroes touched by darkness loom in dim light.

The Wajima Museum of Urushi Art was established in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture as a base for spreading awareness of the region’s outstanding lacquerware-making tradition. The external appearance of the Museum is reminiscent of the Azekura-zukuri (ancient architectural style using interlocking logs with a triangular section) architecture of the Shoso-in treasure house in Nara. Inside the spacious Museum, lacquer is everywhere. Besides displays introducing the historic Wajima lacquer-making tradition, there are also many lacquerware masterpieces made by Living National Treasures and Members of the Japan Art Academy on display. In the adjoining “Urushi no Sato Square”, visitors can view examples of several tree species, including trees that produce lacquer, and other trees the wood of which has lacquer applied to it to make lacquerware.

The Heike Family who were defeated by Genji in the Battle of Danno-ura—The descendants of the younger brother in law of Taira no Kiyomori, Tokitada who was exiled to Noto, became wealthy farmers serving as imperial village officials; the “Tokikuni-ke” is the currently existing wooden house built by the 21st-generation family head. It seems to be the residence of a village official as the building is structured so that the section used for personal use is partitioned from the section used for official business; articles such as official business articles and large junk supplies are on display in the room used for personal use. In addition, Kamakura style strolling pond garden is designed in a strong style which skillfully adopts the natural topography, and it has been designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan.

"Once a shelter used to store portable shrines for events, the structure was rebuilt as this Shinto shrine in 2015 due to the deterioration of the old building. An ""ubuya"" is a room in which women give birth. The shrine is derived from an event held in August in which a god and goddess are wed, build an ""ubuya,"" and give birth to a child god. There is a large log pillar in the center of the shrine and inscribed at its base are the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. It is said that your wish will be granted if you stand on your own sign, circle the pillar clockwise, and pray at the altar."

An art museum located close to the Machino River a 30-minute drive from downtown Wajima City. The museum is housed in a remodeled old rice granary building which has been designated a National Tangible Cultural Property. The museum displays over 250 works of art collected by the Nansoh, a wealthy family which prospered as the hereditary village headmen of imperial lands in the Edo period. Here visitors can see pieces by famous masters, including paintings by the great ink and wash painters Sesshu Toyo and Tawaraya Sotatsu, and pottery by Kyoto potter Ninsei Nonomura. The museum also contains restored areas which reveal what Japanese estates of the time looked like, such as an omoya main residential building and an irori sunken hearth. 400-year-old pines and holly olive as well as Noto Rhododendron obtusum grow in the garden in front of the museum. A Kyoto-style Japanese garden sprawls in the courtyard, and here visitors can take a relaxing stroll while taking pictures of seasonal plants.

This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple is situated along the Minami River a short distance down Prefectural Route 222 from National Route 249 following the Sea of Japan on the Noto Peninsula. The oldest and largest Jodo Shinshu temple in Noto, the temple's main building has a thatched roof, something seen almost nowhere else in Japan. The current main building was rebuilt in 1792; the carvings on the main temple gate and the temple's moss-covered steps speak of its great age. There is also an Agishikogiku-zakura cherry tree which has been designated a Natural Monument by the prefectural government. The tree's tiny flowers consist of nearly 200 petals and change color from crimson to pink to white between the time they are buds and eventually drop to the ground. The tree is in bloom from early through mid-May.

The Daihonzan Soujiji Soin Temple is a temple belonging to the Soto school of Buddhism located in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. This was originally the head temple of the Soto school, but a fire in 1898 caused severe damage to the temple, so the function of head temple was relocated to a temple in Yokohama City, and the temple in Wajima was renamed the Soujiji Soin Temple (“Founder’s Temple”). Today, the buildings within the Temple precincts include the Kyozo (Sutra Repository), Dento-in and Jiun-kaku, which all survived the fire, as well as Shichido-garan (Seven halls) that were rebuilt after the fire; the Temple continues to retain the solemn majesty appropriate to the former head temple of the Soto school.

The “Kuroshima” area of Monzen Town in the city of Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture was a community for owners and sailors of “kitamae-bune” cargo ships which sailed the Sea of Japan from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. In the Edo period, the area was governed as a shogun’s demesne under the shogunate government. Many of the structures from that time, distinguished by their black tiled roofs, wood walls, and latticework, still stand in the area, and Kuroshima has been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The Kadomike Residence, located in Kuroshima and once the home of a cargo shipping agent, has been rebuilt and restored to its original state; inside are displayed a variety of items which illustrate the prosperity the area enjoyed during its heyday.

This history museum presents Noto's traditional culture of metal casting. The history of metal casting in Noto is extensive, dating all the way back to the late Heian period according to documents. For the next 800 years, Noto flourished as a center for the production of cast metal items such as shiogama pans used to make salt. Metal casting in the area died out in the modern Taisho period due to the pressure imposed by low-priced metal products from Takaoka. The museum displays examples of locally cast metal items and tools used in metal casting during the area's bygone heyday. There are also ancient documents which illuminate the connections between area metal casters and the Matsugi family, a noble family hereditarily in charge of metal casters across the country.

"The history of this Shingon Buddhist temple dates back over 1,000 years. Said to have once been called the Shoryuji (""Blue Dragon Temple""), it flourished as the family temple of Hasebe Nobutsura, the first lord of Anamizu Castle. The temple's name was changed to its current title in order to welcome a statue of Amitabha which became the temple's principal object of worship in the Edo period. The temple also owns a spectacular ghost painting records state was created by the famous artist, Maruyama Okyo. In addition, the temple is famous for its Kiku-zakura cherries, a cherry tree variety whose blossoms consist of several layers of petals, and these trees have been designated a Natural Monument by Ishikawa Prefecture. "An old thatch roof estate located 20 kilometers east of downtown Wajima City along National Route 249. After the Genpei war, a portion of the defeated Taira clan ended up in Noto and became the Tokikuni family before splitting into two branches. Because this is the residence of a branch family, it is also known as the ""Shimo-Tokikunike"" or ""Lower Tokikuni Residence."" A wooden, hiraya-style single-story residence, the magnificent central pillar and huge beams visible in the large, 132 square meter doma earthen floored room are truly a sight to behold. The residence as well as its adjoining 6,620 square meter Japanese strolling garden have collectively been designated an Important Cultural Property. The garden's Kirishima azalea come into bloom in early May; the Noto Antoku Tenno-sha shrine is also a sacred ""power spot""."
