Nature Spots in Myoko / Joetsu Area

  • Jade Coast

    Approximately a ten-minute walk from the Echigo Tokimeki Railway's Itoigawa Station, the incredible variety of stones on this shingle beach are brought downstream by the river. The flowing water smooths the edges of the stones, and occasionally, Jade can be found mixed in with the rounded stones, being carried through the city by the Himekawa River. If a person is lucky enough to find some, they are allowed to take it with them. In addition to Jade, other beautiful stones and precious stones can sometimes be found in the river, and you can ask for the stones to be appraised at the Fossa Magna Museum in Miyama Park in the city.
  • Lavender Beach

    Lavender Beach is part of Omi Coast Geosite, about a 14-minute walk from Itoigawa Station in the city of Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture. The beach gets its name from the lavender-colored jade that can be found there. The open area near the beach contains the statue of Nunakawa-Hime, a ruler in Jomon Period, and the relief that portray the processing steps of jade. Beachcombers can find all kinds of stones other than jade, and it is a great place to find a unique stone for one's self.
  • Kotakigawa Jade Gorge

    Jade is sourced in this ravine where a large rock face from Mt. Myojo fell. It has been designated a natural monument of Japan as the Kotakigawa Jadeite Deposit. The first jade ever found in Japan was discovered here in 1938 and now the place is a well known tourist spot in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. Many people are attracted to this beautiful gorge created through years of flowing water with walls of rock and greenery. The towering rock wall is a well known spot for avid rock climbers and the gorge is also famous for producing the Itoigawa Juniper. Collecting rocks is prohibited. Note: Closed in winter and stormy weather
  • Imori Pond

    This is a lake of about 500 meters in circumference located in Ikenodaira Hot Spring adjacent to “Myoko Kogen Visitor Center” in Myoko City in Niigata Prefecture. It is a superb scenic spot and on a sunny day the famous peak, “Mt. Myoko,” is reflected on the surface of the lake. There are about 100 thousand Arum lilies bulbs in the area and the lilies start flowering in late April. It is famous for a sightseeing spot for the changing colors of the leaves in autumn. Visitors can see various plants and birds throughout the four seasons, and there is a footpath around the lake.
  • Shimizugaike Pond

    Sasagaken Peak Plateau in Myoko, Niigata Prefecture
    The pond Shimizugaike is located next to Sasagamine Farm in Suginosawa, Myoko City. Standing by the Pond, there are beautiful views of Sasagamine Farm and of the nearby landscape. The Pond is situated around 15-minute walk from Sasagamine Greenhouse; there are two footpaths giving access to the Pond, one that goes through the Norway spruce forest and another that runs along the edge of Sasagamine Farm. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the Sasagamine highlands.

    Sasagamine in Myoko City Niigata Prefecture
    A mountain rising approximately 1,545 meters above sea level to the southwest of Mt. Myoko. You can see the grassland dotted with trees; a sight similar to a forest in a foreign country. Not only the facilities such as trekking courses, campgrounds, ranches, and Sasagamine Dam are in place, the area is also famous as a location for TV commercials.
  • Sasagamine Highland

    This highland sits at 1,300 meters above sea level at the foot of Mt. Myoko, chosen as one of Japan's 100 famous mountains. It is 40 minutes by car from the Myoko Kogen Interchange and is well known for its beautiful autumn colors. Scattered with giant Japanese elms it gives the impression of a European plain and the walking paths, fields, and camp grounds are filled with seasonal flowers. From spring to fall crowds of people come to enjoy mountain climbing and trekking. The Sasagamine Loop Trail is a recommended walking course that takes about one hour to complete and will let you enjoy the verdant greens of spring or changing fall leaves. It loops around the ranch, Udana spring, Shimizugaike pond, and a German spruce forest.
