The Kanemori Warehouses in Hakodate are a complex of warehouses now used for general purposes. There are shops, the Hakodate Beer Hall and more in the Kanemori Youbutsukan and Hakodate Street Plaza, and BAY Hakodate has cafes and a chapel. The fourth area is Kanemori Hall, which hosts concerts and other events. The warehouses are lit up at night for a totally different atmosphere from the daytime.

This building was built in 1911 to serve as the Hakodate Post Office. This archetypal red brick structure that has survived through war and fire now plays a role in telling the story of Hakodate’s history. The inside of the building has become a shopping mall, and in addition to shops carrying Hokkaido’s folk art and glassware there is also a workshop in which visitors can try sandblasting and crafting music boxes, making this a great place to search for souvenirs. It is about a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive by car from Hakodate Station.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
