Warei-jinja Shrine

Shrine
The head temple for the Warei sect, commonly known as Warei-sama. Enshrined is the spirit of Yanbe Sebe, the chief retainer of Date Hidemune, the first lord of the Uwajima domain. Sebe showed skill in expanding industry and ensuring civil stability. The Warei Festival is held every July 23rd and 24th and it's considered one of Shikoku's top three summer festivals alongside Kochi's Yosakoi Festival and Tokushima's Awa Odori Festival. Floats, measuring more than five meters long, of the ushi-oni will be carried through town as part of an amazing parade. The great torii gate before the temple stands 12 meters tall and is said to be the largest stone torii gate in Japan.

I went early in the morning (~8) so they were still sweeping the area but I immediately felt all tension melt away. Walking the ground, you get a feel for how big the shrine is.

    宇和島駅から歩いて行ける神社です。大きな石鳥居と石橋が特徴的な神社です。絵になる感じの場所ですので、散策にぴったりだと思います。
