Getting Around Miyagi

Thanks to its position as one of Japan's most beautiful nature filled getaways, Miyagi Prefecture and its main holiday options are well connected by a network of public and private transport options. No matter whether you're onsen hopping, going shopping in the center of Sendai, or hoping to escape the city for a few days there are a number of ways to easily get around so you can fully make the most of your time in Miyagi.

Getting Around Miyagi

Throughout the prefecture there are four main train lines connecting all the area's main hubs to one another. Though the devastation of the the 2011 earthquake managed to damage a number of the train lines, the route is almost completely back up to its original condition now. Sendai is the area's main city hub so if you're traveling from outside the area, Sendai Station is going to be your main point for transportation.

Getting Around Miyagi

To get to Sendai from Tokyo catch the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno stations. The trip direct takes about an hour and a half and costs 10,500 yen each way. There are a number of local train options too like the JR Tohoku line, but the journey is much longer, around seven hours and the tickets cost 5,940 yen each way. There are also a number of day and overnight bus options to get to Sendai. The city also has an airport located about 20 km from the city center so if you're traveling direct from somewhere outside of Japan, it's actually quite easy to get to.

The prefecture also has a subway system called the Nanboku line which connects Sendai from north to south and takes around 30 minutes to ride from end to end. Though it might not get you out of the city, it's a very useful network for those wanting to explore the city while in the area. If you're taking public transport out of the city, the following train lines will get you where you need to go: Tohoku Main line, the Joban line, the Senzan line, which provides access to Rinnoji temple, and the Senseki line which connects to Matsushima.

If you're not wanting to be restricted by the public transport system, then it may be worth considering car rental. The area's network of roads provide some pretty incredible city drives so if you're feeling confident behind the wheel, there are a number of car rental options available in Sendai City. During peak times it's best to book in advance because the area does get popular during vacation times, so book ahead. Also if you're wanting to make a few short trips, Sendai is well populated by a network of knowledgeable taxi drivers too.

Getting Around Miyagi

The area also has a collection of shuttle buses that run between hot spring resorts picking up and delivering guests across the prefecture. If you do expect to catch the bus a lot it may be worth considering investing in a Sendai Area Pass or a Sendai Marugoto Pass. Both offer large discounts for one or two days worth of unlimited bus travel.
