Found in the very heart of Hokkaido, the UNKAI TERRACE has hovered above the clouds on Mt. Tomamu since 2005, with several additions throughout the years. Open from mid-May until mid-October every year, visitors come from miles around to experience the unrivaled views of Hokkaido’s nature in its prime. The meticulously well thought-out location of the terrace’s viewing points are to thank for the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains which, weather permitting, can often be seen sat in an expansive sea of thick clouds.

While the main deck offers a generous space to relax and soak in the views as the sun rises, one of the most recent additions and most popular of the decks is the Cloud Walk. This cloud-shaped suspended wooden decking will find you stepping off the mountain and onto a fluffy layer of clouds. One step out into the sky and towards the mountains, the photo opportunities from this spot are unbeatable, but those with vertigo won’t want to look down over the sheer drop that greets you from the edge.

With the terrace over 1,000 meters above sea level and the sun still not up, even during August temperatures at the terrace can get very low. As well as wrapping up, hopping from one deck to the next is a good way to keep warm with the most heart pumping of them all the Cloud Pool, a bouncy web-shaped deck large enough for 10 people to squeeze onto with views down to the clouds below.

The next stop-off for warming up is the Overlook Café, said to be the closest café to the sky. Take out hot drinks and soups are best enjoyed at a seat with a view, just a small addition to the worthwhile 1,900 yen ticket up to the terrace (1,200 yen for ages 7 - 12, 500 yen for pets, and free for preschool aged children and younger). A trip to the terrace means an early rise as it is only open from 4.30 - 7am or 5 - 8am, depending on the month. To enjoy a bit more of a lie-in, spend a night at the Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU and catch the shuttle which runs straight from the resort’s hotel to the gondola boarding point. As public transport doesn’t run early enough to arrive on time in the morning, it is recommended that anyone staying outside of the resort hires a car in order to make their own way to the UNKAI TERRACE.
