Karuizawa is known for its harmonious blending of nature and culture, and Hiroshi Senju Museum is a prime example of this. The sleek futuristic looking structure of the building celebrates the union of architecture, nature, and art. The museum was built with the cooperation of leading Japanese architect Ryue Nishizawa, and leading artist and building namesake Hiroshi Senju – he is also the first Asian to receive the honour of winning an individual award at the Venice Biennale. Ehon-no Mori Museum
Ehon-no Mori Museum
The Karuizawa Picture Book Museum, also known as Ehon-no Mori Bijutsukan, sits tucked away deep in Kuruizawa’s pleasant green forest. It is home to an impressive collection of more than 6,000 works, most of which are Anglo-American, including picture books and some of their classic corresponding original sketches. Notable pieces include first editions of Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella, to name a few. The pleasant book museum is designed to allow guests to laze away and sit back with a classic work and enjoy having a read in the relaxing environment.

Erz Toy Museum
Erz Toy Museum
Located just across the street from the Picture Book Museum you’ll find the Erz Toy Museum. Here you’ll be greeted by an almost fairytale like wonderland that will excite the young and the young at heart. Toy lovers rejoice, this is the place for you. There are a number of toys on display from different eras, with the highlight being the vast array of classic wooden toys which are available to be played with if one so chooses. The wooden toys are named after the German region of Erzgebirge where they originate, hence the name ‘Erz Toy Museum’. The lovely museum also has a tranquil café with a pleasant garden view.

Karuizawa New Art Museum
Karuizawa New Art Museum
The Karuizawa New Art Museum showcases work from the post-war period of Japan up until the present day, and is a terrific destination for all fans of contemporary art. It houses works from renowned local artists, as well as a few international artists. The building was designed by Japanese architect Rikuo Nishimori, and was designed to complement the museum’s natural landscape. Karuizawa New Art Museum is a pleasant place for art lovers, both young and old, to spend the afternoon wandering through the many modern exhibits.
