Ito Overview

One of Izu’s most popular destinations is undoubtedly the onsen-rich city of Ito which lies part way down the east coast of the peninsula. Spectacular scenery, various local crafts, and an abundance of naturally heated spring water give the area an irresistible charm with an altogether different energy when compared to the large cities of Japan.

  • Well known as a hot spring resort town, Ito City is home to almost a dozen public baths that are frequented by both locals and visitors alike who visit to unwind in the healing warm waters of the area. The mish mash of architecture across the city is mainly made up of tourist accommodation. With few foolish enough to not take advantage of the city’s hot springs, the majority of Ito’s spread of hotels and traditional Japanese ryokan house their own natural spring water baths.

While onsen take the center stage in Ito, other attractions in the area include the old ryokan Tokaikan which is open to the public, as well as a zoo, craft museums, a number of parks, and a varied coastline sure to float anyone’s boat. Not only does the coast in the Ito area provide white sand beaches and clear waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, it is also home to the Jogasaki Coast, a stunning stretch of rugged cliff formations as well as uncountable number of quiet spots overlooking the sea from shrines and lighthouses.

Located at the edge of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Ito benefits from kilometers of nature including open green spaces such as Izu Kogen a beautiful corner of the peninsula kitted out with luxury villas and a high concentration of museums. The mountainous areas further inland to the south of Izu offer hiking opportunities aplenty as well as challenging cycling routes, golf courses, and camping grounds for anyone wanting to get out and be active. Mt. Omuro, the largest of the region’s mountains, is an extinct volcano often referred to as an inverted rice bowl due to its perfectly rounded shape. Climbing to the summit offers views over the throng of mountains further north of Izu including the nation’s favorite Mt. Fuji which towers above them all. Less than 30 minutes from the city of Atami where the bullet train runs to, Ito is an easy 90-minute trip from Tokyo.
