Opened to the public in December 2016, Sanagi Shinjuku attracted attention from the word go thanks to its quirky location in an underpass just a few minutes walk from Shinjuku Station. While there’s undeniably no shortage of places to consume in this gastronomical hub, Sanagi Shinjuku’s multifunctionality makes it a unique space combining a multicultural spread of cuisine, art and events all under one brilliantly decorated roof which merges from a web of colorful traditional lanterns in one room to carefully arranged toys on the next.

Sanagi’s food court features four stands, which change on a seasonal basis. While Japanese food is almost always on offer, you can also expect stands serving up dishes from Southeast Asia, India, and the west. The current crowd pleaser is the newly installed Alley Xie Jiaoxiang tea lovers’ stand, a brand already well-established in Taiwan, the birthplace of bubble tea. With no ordinary cups of tea here, pick up a cup of tapioca ball-filled milky tea or choose from an array of rainbow colored teas from their Aurora Series.

Focusing on promoting next generation creators is at the heart of the Sanagi Incubation gallery and event space. The huge variety of art on display is on rotation with everything from prints and wall displays to installments and digital art. On the search for new talent, the gallery considers any artists that inquire about exhibiting their artwork making it a breeding ground for unknown and experimental artists’ work.

The art on offer isn’t limited to visuals with DJs performing at evening and weekend events in the pink neon-lit dOVE & PEACH bar. The variety of DJs promises an eclectic mix of sounds from modern electro to traditional enka which invites a trendy crowd who come to celebrate the diversity of events while sipping on a classy cocktail, a craft beer, or sake served in a jar sporting Sanagi’s feathered mascot, Sana D.

Extra homely perks to the space include Sana D’s Bedroom, which is a shoes off affair for drinks at low tables in a tatami room. As Tokyo moves into the cold winter months, the Sajiki salon brings out its kotatsu, low tables covered with a blanket that is pumped with hot air to keep its relaxed visitors toasty.
