Edomae Jokamachi - 2020 Newest Gourmet Hot Spot in Toyosu

Opening at Tokyo’s Toyosu Market on January 24, 2020, is an exciting temporary complex themed on Edomae (old Tokyo style). It’s just one minutes’ walk from Shijo-mae Station and will remain open for three years until the Senkyaku Banrai shopping and entertainment complex launches in the spring of 2023.

Edomae Jokamachi 江戸前城下町features 21 stores, including restaurants serving sushi made using fresh fish from the Toyosu Market, sweet shops and gift stores selling unique Japanese souvenirs. English menus make it a welcoming destination for tourists and it can easily be combined with a visit to the adjacent toyosu fish market.

    ― What is Edomae Jokamachi?

    Edomae Jokamachi is comprised of three different zones.

    ・豊洲場下町: Toyosu Jokamachi (Food Hall)
    ・市場小路: Shijo Koji (Marché)
    ・江戸前広場: Edomae Hiroba (Square)

    Toyosu Jokamachi is a food hall building where you can enjoy a variety of authentic Japanese culinary experiences. Fresh fish and seafood are sourced from the adjacent market and transformed into a range of delectable dishes.

    Shijo Koji is a marketplace where you can purchase tuna products, dried fish and other ingredients for creating Japanese cuisine at home, as well as unique souvenirs for family and friends.

    Lastly, Edomae Hiroba Square is a multi-purpose open space where outdoor markets and seasonal events are held.

    Edomae Jokamachi is home to several restaurants where you can feast on some of the freshest sushi in Tokyo.

    This takeout-only store specializes in kaisendon (seafood rice bowls), which start from as little as 1,000 yen. Our recommendation is their Uni Ikura Mori Kaisen Irodori Don “うに・いくら盛り海鮮いろどり丼”, featuring sea urchin and salmon roe. If you’re after sushi, they also sell futomaki (thick roll sushi) and inari (filled, fried tofu) that are exclusive to this store.

    Aside from aburi (lightly grilled) sushi, this restaurant specializes in traditional Edomae sushi made using red vinegar rice. If you can’t decide, we recommend their Shun Nigiri 旬握り (2,750 yen), which features eight sushi made using seasonal ingredients and a bowl of miso soup. It’s exclusive to the Edomae Jokamachi store, with the option to dine in or takeaway.

    3. Sushina “寿司菜”

    Sushina uses only the highest-quality ingredients to craft its gourmet sushi, which can be enjoyed while standing at the counter and watching their skilled chefs at work. Their nine-piece Nigiri Sushi (2,200 yen) comes with a fried egg and offers a taste of various fish and seafood options.

    4. Suzutomi “鈴富”

    If you’re after affordable sushi, head to this stand-up restaurant where pieces start at just 150 yen. It specializes in tuna from the adjacent fish market, which is transformed into nigiri sushi and rice bowls, and can be accompanied by self-service green tea.

    Aside from sushi and seafood, you can also dine on other iconic Japanese dishes, such as ramen, udon and matcha sweets, many of which are exclusive to Edomae Jokamachi.

    Head to Neiroya (ねいろ屋) if you feel like ramen, with their Tokusei Noukou Tai (sea bream) shio ramen exclusive to the Toyosu Market.

    Oden is the focus of Umi no Sachi Fukuwarai (海の幸 福笑) , another stand-up restaurant whose signature dish is the seven-ingredient Shichifuku 七福 (350 yen).

    Other gourmet destinations not to miss are the outdoor Pop-up Stand Jokamachi Saryo (ガーデンスタンド 場下町茶寮) where you can sample matcha beer and Hokusai Sabo (北斎茶房) , which offers an enticing range of traditional Japanese sweets made using locally-sourced ingredients.

    ― Unique souvenir shops

    If you want to pick up unique souvenirs before heading home, don’t miss Miyagedokoro Toyosu ICHIBAN (みやげ処 豊洲 ICIBAN) , which is stocked with plenty of inspiring goods you might not find elsewhere.

    You can also purchase bluefin tuna steaks, sashimi and rice bowls at Hon-Maguro Chokubaisho (本マグロ直売所) that’s sourced directly from the Toyosu Market each morning.

    In addition, handmade Japanese kitchen knives attracting many fans worldwide can be purchased at Sugimoto Hamono (杉本刃物豊洲店) . Each knives are carefully handmade using traditional craftsmanship.

    N.B. Shijo Kaisenyaki Umami is open until 9:00 pm.

    a one-minute walk from Yurikamome's Shijo-mae Station, six minutes from Shin Toyosu Station, or 19 minutes from Toyosu Station’s Exit 6b on the Yurakucho Line.
