瑞泉寺由親手打造京都天龍寺、西芳寺等的造園名人兼僧侶夢窗國師於1327年創建。從雕刻在鐮倉石岩盤上的大洞「天女洞」，可眺望以二階堂紅葉谷為背景的書院庭園先驅「岩庭」，其庭園景緻十分幽靜。這座「名勝瑞泉寺庭園」也獲指定為日本國家特別名勝、名勝。秋天紅葉季節的美麗景觀堪稱絕妙。
