    There are flowers in bloom all year round at this famous flower park. The most popular time to visit is mid April to mid May, when the Fujinohana Monogatari event is held. During this period, almost 1,000 square meters of trellises are heavy with wisteria flowers and there is a wisteria tunnel some 80 meters long. The sheer scale and beauty of the event is intoxicating.

    To end this short tour of Ashikaga, drop by Yukarinoten a noddle shop patronised by locally born poet Mitsuo Aida for 50 years, which is now decorated with his poetry. Here, you can try the noodle dish nishin soba, which contains a sweetened boiled fish known as kanroni. This was a favorite of Aida, who is said to have always ordered it as a side dish when drinking. It’s a rare and wonderful treat.
