开山鼻祖是1327年曾亲自设计京都的天龙寺、西芳寺等庭园的著名僧人梦窗国师。从在镰仓石的岩石上雕刻巨大洞穴的“天女洞”向外望去，可以看到以二阶堂红叶谷为背景的庄重大气的庭园，这是开启书院庭园先河的“岩石庭园”。“名胜瑞泉寺庭园”被指定为国家特别名胜。秋天红叶季节堪称绝景。
