- Once the home of some of the region’s most powerful samurai, the Aizu samurai residence is now a fascinating, well-preserved museum dedicated to Japan’s fascinating samurai history. The original complex was burned down in 1868, but what stands today is an equally impressive recreation of the site that dates back to the Edo-period. Pop by and feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

- Sitting at the base of Iimori-yama, is where you’ll find the White Tigers Memorial Hall, also known as the Byakkotai Memorial Hall. This monolithic white building is a dedication to the story of the city’s teenage samurais who committed suicide during Boshin civil war of 1868.

- A fascinating almost rickety looking tower, the Sazaedo Pagoda sits on the site of Iimoriyama Shrine. It’s a popular place for tourists, as visitors can climb to the top of the pagoda via up the spiral ramp inside.

- Looking over the city of Aizu is where you’ll find Iimoriyama, the hillside that houses both the Sazaedo Pagoda and the memorial hall. Here along the path you’ll find dedications to the young samaurai soldiers that committed seppuku (suicide) after seeing the Tsuruga Castle on fire. Climb the hill for a scenic view of the city, and a little deeper education on the history of Aizu.
