Indulge yourself in art! A Naoshima cycling plan

This is a cycling plan around Naoshima Island, the art island in the Seto Inland Sea that is visited by people from all over the world. Visitors can enjoy the delicious cuisine and rice of the island, including “red pumpkin,” the symbol of the island, the art museum designed by Tadao Ando, as well as public art baths!     You’ll see this café and guesthouse just as you enter the town. Here you can hire bicycles. It’s best to hire a battery-assisted bike, as the roads around the underground art museum you’ll be visiting later are quite hilly.

    For lunch, drop by this refurbished “kominka” in the Honmaru district for some good, honest Japanese grub. Aisunao’s side dishes of brown rice and plenty of fresh vegetables are not only good for the body, but good for the mind as well. Popular here is the mouth-watering “Susuriko,” a special lunch set of somen noodles in soup served with some healthful side dishes.

    Among the many artworks to appreciate here are paintings from Claude Monet's water lily series and James Turrell's “Open Sky.” The facility itself is something of an artwork itself. Designed by Tadao Ando, much of the museum has been built underground so as not to impair the beauty of the landscape.

    When you return to the harbor area, be sure to check out this sento, which is now both an art space and a public bath. The whole thing is the creation of artist Shinro Otake, whose fantastical view of the world can only be appreciated by entering the bath. The booth at the entrance sells original bath sets and towels, so you don’t need to come prepared.

    Before catching the ferry off the island, check out the many souvenirs available at this roadside station by the port. Popular items include “Solashio,” made from Seto Inland Sea salt, and various pumpkin goods. When you’ve finished shopping, relax in a café or on an outdoor bench and watch for your boat's arrival.
