    One of the Japan’s five great Zen temples of Japan, Engakuji Temple is the perfect place to begin your exploration of Kita-Kamakura. Built into the foliage covered hillside, the temple is features plenty of historic relics including the Sanmon main gate, which dates all the way back to 1783 and Shariden hall, home to an enshrinement of a tooth of Buddha. The area is particularly beautiful in autumn when the trees turn a vibrant shade of red.

    Founded in 1160, Meigetsuin Temple is a temple of the Rinzai Zen Sect, and although it’s fascinating, arguably its main attraction is its lush garden of vibrantly colored hydrangeas. In the muggy summer months the flowers hit peak bloom covering the grounds in suspended explosions of blue petals. Another point of interest is the temple’s main hall (Hojo).
