- Mino grew wealthy from its washi industry and the handsome homes of the paper barons still anchor the historical district at the center of town. Hotel baison is part of a new wave of renewal in the washi town. This boutique hotel has found a home in the mansion of a washi wholesaler, down a narrow lane from Mino’s former commercial district. A boutique hotel in the old town: Hotel baison Hotel baison is part of a trend that has seen old facades in the district occupied by new businesses. Instead of bulldozing old buildings to put up generic business hotels and condos, the quirky spaces in the old quarter remain, waiting for entrepreneurs with big ideas. There is suddenly space for new ideas to flourish. Like the Alex Kerr-led renovation of the Tsumesho Mikuni in the coastal Mikuni town of Fukui, and similar guest houses in Kyoto, the result is a beautiful hotel but also a project of preservation. The project to renovate these historic buildings is an expensive and complicated undertaking, but it means that more people will be able to appreciate the charms of these homes. A boutique hotel in the old town: Hotel baison As with other machiya renovations, the rooms are limited at Baison, and each is unique. There is the Shiki room, wrapped with wood, highlighted with bamboo features, with a view out onto the udatsu-crowned rooftops of Mino; the minimalist Ze room, a postmodern monk’s cell cast in polished concrete; the Soku room that contrasts modern materials with bare wood beams; the Ku room, where guests are ensconced in cedar; and the Ri room, echoing the office of a washi wholesaler with its rich leather and burnished wood. A Stay at Yunoshimakan

- Up on a hill overlooking Gero Onsen town sits Yunoshimakan, a traditional Japanese ryokan specialising in hot springs. With a history of over 80 years, this spectacular building has garnered a reputation as one of the best ryokan in Gero Onsen with its status as a National Tangible Cultural Asset and its celebrity guests including the likes of Emperors Showa and Akihito. A Stay at Yunoshimakan Yunoshimakan is a grand sukiya style ryokan which was built over three years by local artisans and finally opened to the public in 1931. Set over three storeys, the ryokan offers a number of traditional rooms from the majestic main hall to the immaculate guest rooms, all complete with a private onsen and connected by atmospheric hallways. The top quality service starts the moment you arrive at Gero Station where a shuttle bus runs guests all the way up to the elegant entrance of the ryokan once an hour between 1:35pm and 5:35pm. Gero Onsen's Retro Shirakaba Hotel

- While Gero Onsen town may be brimming with onsen ryokan (traditional guest houses with their own natural hot springs), many of them are newly built and upper market meaning high prices tend to come with the territory. Shirakaba Hotel found in the very centre of Gero Onsen town goes against the trend eschewing any pretensions with its old style feel and hospitality all topped off with a traditional menu that is not to be missed. Gero Onsen's Retro Shirakaba Hotel For those arriving into Gero Station Shirakaba Hotel is one of the most convenient of the town’s guest houses located just a seven-minute walk from the station over the Hida River in the very centre of town. Greeted in by friendly staff, the unassuming European style lobby area is a good introduction to the hotel’s effortless retro style found in its decor throughout. Heading up to the guest rooms, the simple style fuses elements of Japan and the West. The main perk of the rooms is the views they offer from the windows; the Hida River and its neighbouring free outdoor onsen below promise the best of the views when they light up atmospherically at night. Gero Onsen's Retro Shirakaba Hotel Traditional dining and impeccable service are what give Shirakaba Hotel its good reputation. A Stay at Oyado Yamakyu

- In the last ten years, Takayama has experienced a boost in the tourism industry and as a result plenty of hotels and hostels have popped up to accommodate the influx of visitors. There are also many ryokans to choose from depending on the kind of budget or style of accommodation you would like to experience. A Stay at Oyado Yamakyu Nestled between the old private houses and the Higashiyama Temple route is one of the more popular ryokans in Takayama, Oyado Yamakyu. Featuring twenty traditional Japanese-style rooms with peaceful views of the neighbouring Higashiyama area. Each room is equipped with complimentary yukata, wifi access and traditional tatami flooring. There are two dining rooms, where full home-cooked traditional dishes are served on low tables on tatami. Using only local produce, the Yamakyu offers dishes like the famed Hida Beef and Hoba Miso as well as freshly made tempura accompanied by tart oka pickles. They can also accommodate dietary requests when made in advance. A Stay at Oyado Yamakyu Yamakyu wraps around a central courtyard that has a traditional Japanese garden complete with cobbled paths and a red wooden bridge. The lobby and lounging areas are decorated with artefacts, paintings, and ceramic displays, like an eclectic museum of history. Along the red carpet corridors are a collection of antiques such as a giant longcase clock. They even have photographs of all the famous Japanese guests that have come to stay over the years. Where to Stay in Okuhida

- Hakuunsou Onsen Hotel, a riverside retreat, is all a traveller could hope for when exploring the countryside around the Japanese Alps with mountains, hot springs, and interesting attractions in the close vicinity. Okuhida can be enjoyed as a day trip from nearby Takayama as some hotels operate as day spas open to the public. However, Hakuunsou prides itself on maintaining guests privacy with strictly guest-only hot springs allowing a more personal bathing experience. Hakuunsou Onsen Hotel Hakuunsou Hotel is actually the sister hotel of the popular Kazeya. Kazeya is a quiet Japanese inn with 10 spacious rooms offering views over the central garden and the Hida mountains. Like Hakuunsou, Kazeya has easy access to activities like hiking, hot springs, ski resorts and the Shinhotaka Ropeway. There is a bus that can bring you from Okuhida Onsen-go bus terminal in 30 minutes, however, exploring Okuhida onsen area by car is more convenient as public transport can be a little infrequent in this rural mountain area. In addition, both hotels offer free parking for guests and the closest bus stop is a stone's throw from Hakuunsou. Where to Stay in Okuhida At Hakuunsou there are five onsens in total: two outdoor baths and three indoor baths all brimming with steaming, natural spring water. Unlike other hotels, where more often than not guests share outdoor onsens, the onsens at Hakuunsou are all private. The baths are open throughout the night and require no reservations - If the door is unlocked, the onsen is all yours. The hotel also has an in-house masseuse available between the hours of 15:00 to midnight. Guests are also welcome to make use of the larger onsens at Kazeya, just a few houses down. Where to Stay in Okuhida The staff at Hakuunsou are extremely helpful and will do their best to accommodate guests’ requests and provide local sight-seeing recommendations. Before sitting down to a hearty homecooked meal, we had a ride on the free rental bikes provided by the hotel and explored the outskirts of the nearby Okuhida National Park. 24일이라 다른 곳 구하기 힘들어서 묵었던 곳. 일본식 다다미 방으로 벽걸이 에어컨과 석유 난방기가 있었고 좁은 방에 사용 시 냄새 및 소음 때문에 벽걸이 에어컨만 사용. 화장실 변기만 있고 샤워실이 없어서 공용 온천을 이용함. 야외 노천탕도 좁고 온도도 낮아서 실내탕만 이용 가능했슴.
