- Attention Ghibli fans! Ghibli Park is set to open in the fall of 2022, bringing some of the studio’s most iconic films to life in a theme park setting. So to get you excited for its launch, here are 20 spots that are all some way or another connected to Ghibli. Ghibli Park Image photo Set to open in the fall of 2022, Ghibli Park will recreate the fantasy worlds created by the studio in Aichi Expo Memorial Park. Three different areas will open initially - Youth Hill, Big Ghibli Warehouse and Dondoko Forest - with an additional two areas - Mononoke Village and Witch Valley - coming in 2023. Toshio Suzuki & Studio Ghibli Exhibition Toshio Suzuki & Studio Ghibli Exhibition Toshio Suzuki & Studio Ghibli Exhibition After its initial run in Hiroshima two years ago (and subsequent exhibitions in Nagoya, Kanazawa and Tokyo), the Toshio Suzuki & Studio Ghibli Exhibition is taking place at Huis Ten Bosch Museum in Nagasaki from July 13 to September 23, 2019. It focuses on the work of long-time Studio Ghibli producer, Toshio Suzuki, with engaging artworks and calligraphy by Suzuki himself. Learn about his early inspiration in Showa-era manga and see a three-meter-tall depiction of Yubaba and Zeniba from “Spirited Away”. - Hiroshima is one of the most popular destinations for tourists to visit on Japan’s “Golden Route” and resonates with many foreigners due to its atomic bomb history. But aside from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, the city is also the access point for the UNESCO-listed Itsukushima Shrine and its floating torii gate, as well as the sacred Shimanami Kaido cycling route. With numerous small islands to explore and local delicacies to taste, there are plenty of reasons to stay a little longer. In this article, we’ll introduce 33 of the best things to do in Hiroshima to help plan your visit. Photograph Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine Itsukushima Shrine Situated in the middle of Hiroshima Bay, Miyajima is a small island that’s an easy day trip from Hiroshima. It’s famed for the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Itsukushima Shrine and its bright orange torii gate that appears as though it’s floating on water at high tide. Miyajima and the Itsukushima Shrine comprise one of Hayashi Gahō's “Three Views of Japan”, which were selected in 1643 and have become iconic scenes in the country. Aside from this 6th-century Shinto shrine, the island is also home to the Museum of History and Folklore and the beautiful Momijidani Koen (“Red Maple Valley Park”). N.B. Please be aware that the torii gate is currently undergoing major renovations and a completion date has not yet been announced. Sample the local oysters at Kakiya Kakiya No trip to Miyajima is complete without sampling the local specialty - oysters! The clear streams of the Ota River are renowned as prime places for oyster aquaculture and Kakiya, a restaurant on Miyajima, offers one of the best oyster lunches in the region. Here you can have your oysters fried, grilled or au gratin, as well as eaten fresh from the water. Their menu is available in English so it’s easy to order and there’s a good selection of beer and sake to accompany your meal. Kakiya Eat conger eel at Anago-Meshi Ueno Anago-Meshi Ueno Another local specialty is conger eel and the Anago Meshi Ueno restaurant serves some of the best. It’s located directly in front of the ferry port that takes you to Miyajima, so it’s a convenient place to grab a quick bite to eat or a takeaway lunch box to enjoy on the island. Their conger eel is caught in the waters near Miyajima and served with a sweet and spicy teriyaki sauce, with small, medium or large servings available. Anago-Meshi Ueno Explore the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Atomic Bomb Dome For many visitors to Hiroshima, the Atomic Bomb Dome and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum are high on their list of things to do. The Atomic Bomb Dome was originally opened as the Product Exhibition Hall in 1915 and after the atomic bomb “Little Boy” was dropped at the end of World War II, it was the only structure left standing near the hypocenter of its impact. It’s been left as a constant reminder of the destruction that was caused and the thousands who lost their lives. The Atomic Bomb Dome is surrounded by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which was designed by Japanese architect Kenzō Tange. It’s dotted with sculptures and monuments in memory of the victims and lies in what was once the bustling center of Hiroshima. Be sure to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum where you can learn about the city before the bombing and the impact it left. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Take in the views of Hiroshima from the Orizuru Tower Orizuru Tower Situated on the east side of the Atomic Bomb Dome is the Orizuru Tower, which takes its name from the folded paper crane that became a symbol of peace in the aftermath of World War II. It features a rooftop observation deck that offers sweeping views of Hiroshima City, stretching all the way to Miyajima on a clear day. After viewing the cityscape, you can pick up unique Hiroshima gifts in the first-floor shops. Orizuru Tower Stroll through the Shukkeien garden Shukkeien garden Situated adjacent to the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum is this tranquil garden, which was established in 1620 during the Edo period. It suffered extensive damage following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and served as a refuge for victims in the aftermath. Today, it has been reconstructed to its former glory, with valleys, mountains and forests represented in miniature form while following traditional Japanese aesthetics. Shukkeien centers around a tranquil pond, with a pathway leading to several teahouses where you can stop and enjoy the views. Shukkeien garden See Hiroshima Castle illuminated after dark Hiroshima Castle Also reconstructed following the nuclear attack was Hiroshima Castle (also known as “Carp Castle”), which dates to 1958. The original Hiroshima Castle was built in 1589 by the feudal lord, Mori Terumoto, and served as the heart of the town. The modern castle centers around the main keep that’s five stories tall and is surrounded by a protective moat, a shrine and a scattering of ruins. If you want to learn more, you can visit the history museum inside the castle and discover how it was reconstructed. Aside from exploring during the day, be sure to return after dark when Hiroshima Castle is beautifully lit up. Admire the yōga and French Impressionist works at the Hiroshima Museum of Art Hiroshima Museum of Art The Hiroshima Museum of Art is situated in Hiroshima Central Park and is renowned for its collection of French Impressionist paintings that are displayed alongside traditional Japanese prints. Works by Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh are all featured in the gallery spaces, as are paintings by Japanese artists in a Western style. See yōga Western-style oil paintings by leading exponents such as Kuroda Seiki and Kishida Ryusei, then marvel at the bronze statue of Venus by Maillol. Hiroshima Museum of Art Visit Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium, the current home of Hiroshima Toyo Carp Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium If you’re a sports fan, then don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium where the Hiroshima Toyo Carp compete. Founded by citizens in 1950, the Hiroshima Toyo Carp are now hugely popular and it can be difficult to get tickets to games. Even if your visit doesn’t coincide with a game day (or you can’t get tickets), you can still explore the stadium on a tour and get a behind-the-scenes look at areas that are usually off-limits to the public. See where the players get ready and where they warm up, then step onto the field to experience the stadium from their perspective. Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium Feast on Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki at Okonomimura or Mitchan Mitchan If you’re visiting Hiroshima, don’t pass up the opportunity to try Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, which is unique from other okonomiyaki around Japan. The story began when Isao Ise opened an okonomiyaki stand in 1950 and it was later taken over by Mitchan who began to enhance the recipe with soba, creating a layered okonomiyaki. You can try this local delicacy at one of the seven Mitchan stores in Hiroshima that exist today, with the oldest one in Hatchobori. Where to go in Japan: A History Lover’s Guide

- The best way to really appreciate Japan's diverse and fascinating story is to go beyond the history books and really immerse yourself in the local culture. From ancient pottery towns to countryside farmhouses and quaint inner-city neighborhoods, here are some of the best. Nikko Edomura, Tochigi Nikko Edomura, Tochigi If you like your history with a little extra fun, then be sure to book a trip to Nikko Edomura. It’s a small town recreated in the true to live image of the Edo Period. Also known as Nikko Edo Wonderland this unique amusement park is part adventure playground, part history lesson, and part living museum all rolled into one. It’s the perfect place to visit if you’re traveling with the family, or want an immersive, hands-on way to learn about this fascinating moment in Japan’s history. As well as functioning stores, display shop fronts, and interactive attractions, the park is home to a Haunted Temple, complete with spooky, Japanese spirits, an illusion room, and a challenging Ninja Trick Maze. Fushimi, Kyoto Fushimi, Kyoto A town overflowing with history and sake, Fushimi in Kyoto Prefecture, is where samurai legend Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Momoyama Castle, establishing the area as a political and economic center. To best enjoy the city, take a cruise along the Uji Canal which runs through the heart of town, before stopping off at the iconic Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. This brewery dates back to the Meiji Period. Here you can still admire some of the original equipment used for old-style sake brewing. But, even better you can sample some of the area’s finest sake, a concoction that’s been perfected over centuries. Takehara, Hiroshima Takehara, Hiroshima Sometimes referred to as ‘Little Kyoto,’ Takehara is a city with plenty of similarities, but a culture and history that is uniquely its own. Located in Hiroshima Prefecture, Takehara’s history was an affluent one; the town was once home to families working in the salt trade business. Once many of them got rich they built their impressive Edo-era (1603-1868) homes. When all the money dried up, the history and legacy of the Takehara was almost forgotten, however luckily city fathers and local NPOs intervened to preserve the heritage of this architecturally stunning old town. Shirakawago, Gifu Shirakawago, Gifu Nested deep in the Hida mountains of central Gifu Prefecture lives one of Japan’s most picturesque preserved towns, Shirakawago. Shirakawago is a village of gassho-zukuri, thatched-roof farm houses built during the Edo-era. What makes gassho-zukuri so special is its unique architecture, they feature high sharp roofs to protect from snow piles, and high ceiling space - which was once used to house silkworms - and beams that looks like two hands clasped in prayer. If you’re interested in discovering how the people in mountain villages in Japan lived all those years ago, then be sure to add a stay in Gifu to your itinerary. Tokoname, Aichi Tokoname, Aichi Pottery is one of Japan’s most influential crafts, and one of the best places to explore its legacy is by making the trek to Tokoname, an ancient kiln town in Aichi Prefecture. Boasting over 1,000 years of pottery history it’s practically a living, breathing, ceramic museum. Tokoname has a few pottery walks that weave their way through the city. For a completely immersive experience, it’s recommended you pick the longer, four-kilometer course, ‘B’ which will take you through the rustic old kilns, past the old black walled factories and to the town’s INAX Live Museum and the Tokoname Tounomori Museum. Yanesen, Tokyo Yanesen, Tokyo If you don’t have time to leave the city, but still want a taste of old-Japan, then hop on the Yamanote city loop line, and jump off at Nippori JR Station. A short walk from the station is where you’ll find an area the locals call Yanesen. Located in the northeastern corner of Tokyo, Yanesen is the casual name given to the three neighboring shitamachi (‘downtown’) neighborhoods of Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi. The quaint, ramshackle shops of Yanaka are today home to an eclectic community of local food stall owners, artisans, and contemporary independent cafes galleries housed in building seemingly frozen in time. Iwakuni Overview

- Iwakuni is found in the very east of Yamaguchi Prefecture just a stone’s throw from Hiroshima Prefecture. Whether a quick day trip from Hiroshima City or the start of a full Yamaguchi adventure, the relatively quiet seaside city offers pretty landscapes, delicious food, and the chance to cross one of Japan’s three great bridges.The city of Iwakuni is instantly recognisable by its central Kintai Bridge, a five-tiered wooden structure that boasts the title of one of Japan’s three great bridges. Set against a backdrop of verdant mountains, the heart of the city lies in this cobbled area where locals and visitors alike stroll along the Nishiki River appreciating the views. On April 29th the annual Kintai Bridge Festival takes place around the bridge and in the nearby Kikko Park. A lively mishmash of parades, taiko drumming, and food stalls, the festival is reminiscent of the last feudal government in Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603 - 1868), with locals dressing up in the colourful outfits of the daimyo.A former castle town, the reconstructed Iwakuni Castle sits upon Mt. Shiroyama overlooking the city. The Iwakuni Castle Mountain Ropeway takes visitors one way for 320 yen or on a return trip for 550 yen between 9am and 5pm. Back down the mountain away from the four-storey castle lie a number of temples and other impressive architectural structures open to visitors as well as numerous eateries to try out the seafood which is brought in directly from the neighbouring Seto Inland Sea. Iwakuni’s specialities include sweet ayu fish as well as its own take on sushi which is made using a square mold. The region is also known for its lotus roots, or renkon, which can be found in many forms including pickles, tempura, and chips. From the beginning of June to the end of August Iwakuni celebrates its abundant seafood with a cormorant fishing festival where the usual fishing trip is spiced up with the help of a set of sharp-eyed cormorant birds. Visitors can join in the festival by hopping on a cruise along the Nishiki River.Nestled right alongside Hiroshima Prefecture, Iwakuni Station to Hiroshima Station is less than one hour direct on the JR Sanyo Line. Even closer is the highly celebrated Miyajima Island, famous for its red torii gate planted out at sea, which can be reached by ferry from Miyajimaguchi Station just a 25-minute train ride from Iwakuni Station. ©NAVITIME JAPAN. The Studio Ghibli Heritage in Tomonoura

- The scenery in the 2008 movie “Ponyo” is largely derived from Tomonoura. If you are a fan of the movie, there are certain places in town that might be of particular interest to you. Tomonoura is something of a place of pilgrimage for fans of Studio Ghibli’s movies, in particular those of whom put “Ponyo” on top of their list of favorite movies. Many of the locals shares stories of how he, and the rest of the production team, initially came here on a company trip, and fell in love with the place. This is supposed to have been when Hayao Miyazaki himself decided that this quaint little Edo Era town was going to be the biggest inspiration for his next movie. Before beginning production of “Ponyo”, director Hayao Miyazaki even rented a house and lived in Tomonoura for about two months, doing research, enjoying the atmosphere and also interacting with a large number of the locals. The Studio Ghibli Heritage in Tomonoura Today, there are plenty of homages to Ponyo hidden on the streets and in the shops all over Tomonoura. Small handmade statues of Ponyo are seemingly everywhere, and many of the restaurants and cafés we visit have hand-written greetings from members of the animation studio hanging on the walls.Director Hayao Miyazaki also played a big role in the restoration process of the Onfunayado Iroha, a historical building where negations took place after Japan's first naval crisis. The building was slated for demolition, but thanks to the efforts of an ambitious NPO and the famous animation director, it got renovated and turned into one of the most beautiful guesthouses in Tomonoura. The Studio Ghibli Heritage in Tomonoura If you want to explore all the spots in Tomonoura related to Ponyo, we recommend a visit to the local tourist information office, located near the bus stop in Tomonoura. They have a comprehensive map where you can learn a lot about all the places that make appearances in the popular movie, and will be able to point you towards memorable destinations such as the supermarket that appears more or less as a carbon copy in the movie, and the shore where Ponyo appears on land for the first time. Where to Go Tomonoura

- Tomonoura is a small and quiet town that has a surprisingly large number of places worth seeing. Here are a few that we highly recommend that you stop by during your visit. Old Town The central part of Tomonoura consists of a few blocks that date back all the way to the Edo Era (1603-1868). This area is very pleasant to walk around, and many of the buildings has been turned into cute shops as well as a few museums where you can learn more about how life used to be in this quaint little town. There are also a few shops specializing in Homeishu, a local liquor made from a number of different herbs, which is said to have good effects on your health. Although we’re not sure about those health claims, we did enjoy its sweet flavor. The bottles are beautiful and make a good souvenir for friends back home. Old Town Lighthouse One of the most famous landmarks of Tomonoura is the iconic lighthouse in the bay. It was built back in the 17th century, and is roughly eleven meters tall, making it the tallest lighthouse built during the Edo Era that’s still standing today. The pier that the lighthouse stands on is a popular photo spot, as everything that makes this town so scenic can be captured in one photo. The old charm of the Edo Era architecture, the Seto inland sea and the dramatic mountains framing it all in the background. Lighthouse Sensuijima This small island is a mere 6 km in circumference, but well worth the 5-minute ferry ride it takes to get there thanks to its beautiful nature. There are a few hotels and a campground on this little island, as well as a few beaches and some interesting rock formations as well. We liked the small shops near the beach selling everything from souvenirs to home made lemon liquor. Sensuijima is a part of the Setonaikai National Park, the oldest national park in all of Japan. Ferries depart three times per hour from 7:10 am to 9:30 pm and cost 240 yen one way. Sensuijima Temples Tomonoura has several beautiful shrines and temples. One of the most famous ones is the Ioji Temple, located on a steep hill with gorgeous views of the town and the bay down below. Another famous temple is Fukuzenji Temple, where you also can enjoy a splendid view of the sea and the nearby islands, including Bentenjima with its little pagoda, as well as the bigger Sensuijima behind it. Most of the temples and shrines can be visited for free, although a few of them charge a small entrance fee ranging from 100 to 200 yen. Temples Sarasuwatei On the hillside, not far from the Ioji Temple, you will find this charming place that is a combined shop, gallery and café all under one roof, in a glorious minka-style villa with a beautiful garden and great view to boot. Get Around Tomonoura

- Tomonoura is small and easy to get to, and to get around. Here’s everything you need to know about getting in and out of Tomonoura, and how to get around town once you are there. Visiting Tomonoura is easy, but there are not many different options available for getting there. In fact, your only option if you’re traveling on land by public transport, is to take a bus from Fukuyama. Fukuyama is a major city that connects to the rest of Japan by several train lines, including the Sanyo Shinkansen Line. The trip from Tokyo to Fukuyama by Shinkansen takes about 4 hours and a one-way trip costs around 17,000 yen on the faster Nozomi trains. Get Around Tomonoura The bus ride from Fukuyama station to Tomonoura takes about 30 minutes and cost 550 yen depending on if you depart from the tourist information center or continue another couple of stops all the way to the last stop, Tomo Port.Please note that the most common IC cards, Suica and Pasmo, does not work on this bus as of summer 2017. The regional IC cards, called Icoca and Paspy do work however. Buses depart every 20 minutes most of the day. Get Around Tomonoura The only other option to get to Tomonoura is by the “mini cruise” ship that runs between Tomonoura and Onomichi. There are three departures daily in both directions and the trip takes about one hour and cost 2,200 yen, one-way. Please note that this ferry is only available during Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays, and only from March 11th to November 19th.Tomonoura is a small town and all the sightseeing spots worth mentioning can be reached by foot. There are a few local bus lines available, but these are very infrequent and mainly serve the purpose of being an aid to the elderly population of the town. Itineraries in Tomonoura

- Tomonoura is small town that you can comfortably explore in one day. Here’s our suggested way of doing so. 1)You will most likely arrive at Tomonoura by bus from Fukuyama. We recommend that you get off the bus at the tourist information center, where you can get some free maps, or even rent an audio guide that will give you a good explanation in English to many of the sightseeing spots Tomonoura has to offer.2)Walk along the waterfront, just following the road that you arrived on, until you get to the port where the boat for Sensui Jima departs. If you plan to visit this little island – and we really think you should – now is a good chance. The ride there takes just five minutes, and the island is full of beautiful nature, some small shops and restaurants, as well as a hotel with a public bath.3)Continue straight past the Sensui Jima boat ticket office, and head up to the temple on top of the small mountain behind it. From up here you’ll get a splendid view of the Seto Inland Sea, and the many islands it contains. This hill is also something of a cat-lovers paradise – when we went here the stairs leading up to the temple was teeming with them.4)Continue towards the port of Tomonoura and head into the old town. This is the highlight of Tomonoura, and one of the few preserved Edo period ports in all of Japan. Make sure to explore the many charming shops and restaurants that you pass on your way, and don’t forget to look for the homages to Studio Ghibli and their movie “Ponyo” scattered all over town.5)Head to the lighthouse at the waterfront, in the middle of the old town in Tomonoura. Two cafes are located next to it, and it’s a good place to rest before you continue your exploration of Tomonoura. Tomonoura Overview

- A quiet fishing town with a charming old city center where some of the buildings are several hundred years old, Tomonoura is one of the hidden gems in the eastern part of Hiroshima prefecture. Tomonoura is a somewhat strange place. It’s not even an official town, but rather just a part of the hub city of Fukuyama, with a population of around half a million people. The ride from Fukuyama station takes a mere 30 minutes, yet it feels like the two places are much further apart.In Tomonoura there are no skyscrapers nor neon signs, instead, the town greets you with splendid views of the Seto inland sea, some nearby islands, a Meiji period town and what feels like at least a thousand fishing boats in its half-moon shaped harbor. Most of the people living here refer to the town by just “Tomo”, and all of the locals we talked to during our visit seemed to have humble pride of their town.Not too long ago, Tomonoura gained quite a fair bit of attention due to the fact that Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli spent several months here while doing research for the 2008 movie “Ponyo”, about a goldfish princess who wants to become a human. Since the release of the movie this town has seen an increase in tourists – both domestic and international – and there are plenty of ponyo statues and other details paying homage to the movie all over town. Some scenes from the 2013 Hollywood movie “The Wolverine” was also shot here in Tomonoura.Tomonoura has several places that offer a beautiful view of the town and its surroundings, one of these is the old guesthouse Taicho-ro, that dates back to the Edo period. Several hundred years ago the view from the guesthouse was called “the most beautiful scene in Japan”, by an early envoy of Koreans.In the 1980s, the local authorities had plans to build a huge bridge over large parts of the harbor area. As the local residents didn’t want to see their town’s greatest asset – it’s beauty – get ruined, they protested. This was the start of a conflict that went on for decades. Much to the relief of the residents, as well as Hayao Miyazaki, these plans was finally scrapped after a court ruling in 2009 blocked the project in favor of the residents right to preserve the beauty of their town. If you plan to visit Tomonoura, you should be aware that accommodation options are limited to higher-end guesthouses and ryokans.
