The town of Yuasa in Wakayama Prefecture is known in Japan as the birthplace of soy sauce. This claim to fame is probably the main reason to visit this quaint old town and rightly so. But your adventure to this area does not have to stop at the town. For the sea lovers, Suhara Seaside House is a new guesthouse in town that combines beachside-style accommodation with a kayak school, and offers travelers the chance to enjoy old town activities and at the same time seaside fun on the the coast of Yuasa Bay.

As a guesthouse, Suhara Seaside House is new, but it has been operating as a sea kayak school for quite some time now and the same reputable service offered to kayakers is also carried over to the staying guests. When spending the night here guests are welcome to stay in a second floor apartment which feels more like a seaside cottage than the usual guesthouses found around Japan. Only two rooms are available, a triple and a double room which means you’ll only be sharing the space with a few other guests or if traveling in a group of five, you’ll be able to reserve the place exclusively for the group.

The whole guesthouse is spacious and bright, especially during sunny days. Imagine waking with the view of the sea and the sound of the waves… this is exactly what you get at Suehara Seaside House. As soon as you wake up, move on over to the hammock, or better yet, step out to the wooden deck and enjoy homemade breakfast (guests have free access to the kitchen to cook their own meals) while overlooking the bay out in front. A word of advice, although the Suehara Seaside House is in Yuasa, it is a bit out of the way from the town centre and you should buy groceries early in the evening. You can also opt for eating out, but being a small quiet town, the unique restaurants close early and operated at irregular hours.

If you’ve only come to Yuasa to explore the old town, you will be there in no time, but if you’ve also come here to put your paddling skills to the test, you couldn’t have chosen a better location. Sawasaki-san, the man in charge of both the guesthouse and the kayaking school, has a ton of experience in terms of kayaking and is more than happy to guide you through the whole experience. With the kayaks stored on the first floor of the house, you’ll be in the water in now time. There’s a variety of packages available to enjoy your time in the water, including renting a kayak and heading out on your own for those who have the experience.

And after spending the day out on the water or exploring the old town, what better way to wind down than with a hot bath. Although the seaside house has complete showers, it does not have a hot bath, but no need to stress about this. Just make the short trip over to Ofuroyasan, the local public bath closes to Suhara, and the place frequented by the locals to start and end their day.
To reach Suhara Seaside House we recommend you drive. Public transportation to this part of town is scarce and for groceries or quick access to the old town, driving is the best option.
It also doesn’t hurt to carry extra cash in your pocket as a lot of the businesses operate on a cash-only basis. Other than that, take it easy and enjoy Yuasa’s seaside fun.- すはらシーサイドハウス
