Where to Go in Tokushima

Naruto Whirlpools

The Naruto Strait flows between Naruto City and the Awaji Islands, and it connects the Pacific Ocean to the Inland Sea. During high and low tides, this causes the water in the strait to move at up to 20 kmph, creating massive whirlpools up to 20 meters wide. You can see the whirlpools from the Naruto Bridge above the strait or book a boat tour for a close up look at this natural phenomenon.

Awa Jurobe Yashiki (Puppet Theater and Museum)

If you’re looking for a unique cultural experience in Tokushima City, the Awa Jurobe Puppet Yashiki (Theater and Museum) holds classic Japanese puppetry performances twice a day. Three performers work together to manipulate each doll for incredibly lifelike movements. The plays are accompanied by music and a narrator. After catching a live performance, visitors can take a look around the museum portion of the theater to see an array of intricate puppets on display and learn more about the history of Japanese puppetry.

Otsuka Museum of Art

North of Naruto City on Oge Island, the Otsuka Museum of Art is known for its accurate reproductions of Western art. Some famous works can no longer be moved for traveling exhibitions, so the Otsuka Museum of Art has immortalized over 2,000 works from antiquity to the modern period through ceramic recreations. Here, you can see faithful recreations of pieces by greats such as Rembrandt, Da Vinci, Raphael, Van Gogh, Picasso, and more.

Iya Kazurabashi and Oku-Iya Kazurabashi Bridges

For nature enthusiasts, there’s no better place in Tokushima Prefecture than the Iya Valley. In ancient times, vine bridges were used for travel and transporting goods between villages. These days, only three remain: The Oku-Iya Bridges, known as the “Husband” and “Wife” bridges, and the Iya Kazurabashi Bridge. The Iya Kazurabashi Bridge runs 45 meters across and 14 meters above the river below, making it the largest of the three. No need to worry about the sturdiness of the bridges as they are reinforced with steel cables and rebuilt every three years.

Tokushima Prefectural 21st Century Cultural Information Center

In Tokushima City’s Bunkanomori Park, guests of the Tokushima Prefectural 21st Century Cultural Information Center can enjoy innovative, modern installations. In association with the Tokushima Prefectural Museum, the Cultural Information Center hosts rotating art exhibits, events, and movie showings.

Yoshino River Rafting with Happy Raft

Founded in 2004 by an Australian, Happy Raft’s river tours have remained a staple for locals and visitors alike. Certified guides lead guests through the rapids of the Yoshino River, with half-day and full-day packages available. Not limited just to rafting, Happy Raft also has canyoning packages, where groups can explore the area by sliding down waterfalls, swimming downstream, and zip lining.
