The San’in Route Guesthouses

The San’in Route is a stretch of road and train lines connecting Yamaguchi, Shimane, and Tottori Prefectures, in the Chugoku Region and along the Sea of Japan. This route is full of history, abundant scenic nature, and endless hospitality. While exploring this traditional route, also labeled as Route Romantique Sanin, an excellent way to get the locals’ perspective of the area is to stay at the charming guesthouses that have been welcoming guests each with its unique character and interesting staff. Ruco’s interior is a piece of art that includes wall mosaics, vintage denim furniture, and a clay mural which acts as the centerpiece of the place. The local designers and craftsmen really thought about every detail of the design to make Ruco both cozy to stay in and beautiful to admire. Guests can choose between the dormitory room accommodation or the tatami room for more privacy. Both options are very comfortable and bright, and both allow you to enjoy the caring service of the ever-so-helpful staff. The first and second floors are a cafe/lounge and are the perfect setting to start the day with a warm cup of coffee or finish it with a local craft beer and a good chat.

Meguruya Guesthouse - Yunotsu, Shimane

Meguruya Guesthouse is located in Yunotsu Onsen, a historical port town in central Shimane and primary shipping point for the silver mined at Iwami Ginzan during the 17th Century. The owners have done a great job in maintaining this old Japanese house and giving guests the chance to experience life in Yunotsu the old-fashioned way. Guests can sleep comfortably in one of the two tatami rooms, up a wooden staircase that also serves as a storage shelf, or in the open-concept room with a view of the outdoor patio.

Meguruya Guesthouse - Yunotsu, Shimane

In keeping with the traditional theme here, there is no shower inside the guest house, so one must bathe in the onsen bath just up the road, just like the locals did back in the day. On Saturdays guests can catch the rare Kagura Dance performance at the local shrine just a short walk away on the way back to Meguruya. In the morning, take it easy and enjoy the delicious sandwich and coffee set prepped by the charming Chika-san, one of the owners.

Guesthouse Shanti - Tottori, Tottori

The last stop on the San’in Route is Tottori’s Guesthouse Shanti. Located along the Tottori Harbour and run by Reika-san, a well-traveled and easy going host who is happy to share her knowledge of the best sights in the city and equally happy to have a drink in the living room with her guests. The atmosphere at Shanti is pretty laid back and it feels more like a home away from home than a guesthouse. It is also a short walk away from the Karoichi Seafood Market and the port where every other morning a seafood auction is held. During the winter and with Reika-san’s help, a visit to the crab auction might be possible to arrange. If you are in Tottori to get a taste of the Matsuba crab, then Guesthouse Shanti is without a doubt your best accommodation choice.
