Morioka Handmade Village
Morioka Handmade Village, or Morioka Handi-works Square as it is also known, is committed to educating visitors about local products manufactured in the Morioka region and has a vast number of reference and display materials. In addition to this it also has a very hands-on learning orientated focus. The place is divided into three parts, with the workshop area serving as the main attraction. Here guests are granted the fun opportunity to join in classes and workshops and create their own handmade works under the guidance of leading local craftsmen. The 15 workshops on offer include pottery, indigo dying, bamboo wrapping, woodworking, weaving yarn, kokeshi painting, and even cooking classes that teach how to make Morioka cold noodles and traditional crackers.

Another great attraction of Morioka Handmade Village is the Nambu Magariya area, also known as the “Nambu Bent House” area. This area features well preserved old houses that served as residences for locals more than two centuries ago, the old houses are so well kept that they still include the original pillars and wooden baseboards. Stepping into any one of these buildings will be sure to transport you to a time long ago – a great immersive, and extremely educational experience.
Morioka Handmade Village
The village exhibition zone is home to several small stores that sell a range of local products and hand crafted items made on site at the village by traditional craftsmen who have spent years perfecting their respective crafts. Because of this the quality is extremely high, and all products have that homely one of a kind feel to them. This is a great place to pick up little souvenirs for loved ones, or something grand and special for the family home.

The exhibition zone also offers up a number of high quality locally produced food and drink products. There’s even free wine tasting so you can be sure in the quality of the wine on sale. And if that’s not your thing why not snack on some of the free senbei crackers on offer whilst you browse at the various interesting items on offer. If you are feeling something slightly more filling than crackers then you’re in luck as there are a number of delicious restaurants close by that are perfect for tasting some great local village cuisine.
