Bike Ride Around Morioka City

While Morioka is easy enough to travel around by bus, grabbing a bike and exploring the city at your own pace is hands down one of the best ways to get to know the city. With four rivers, a mish mash of architecture, and countless places to pick up food along the way, zipping around on two wheels is sure to find you discovering the many sides of Morioka that give it its unique charm.

Bike hire is no difficult task in Morioka with a number of rental shops offering full day bike hire for around 1,000 yen. However, if you’re not fussy about having the highest quality bike the most wallet friendly option is to grab yourself a public city bike from the underground Rentacycle bike station next to the station. For a full day’s rental at just 200 yen, you’ll have an extra 800 yen to stock up on snacks to boost your pedaling power.

With the city’s four rivers providing plentiful water views, it would be rude not to make the most of the bicycle-friendly paths that run alongside them. If you’re setting off from the station, heading up the Nakatsu River is the most logical starting point which will take you on a quieter route through the center of the highrise buildings. Take a close enough look and you can catch a glimpse of salmon jumping up the river in the autumn months.

Cycling up Nakatsu River you’ll come across varying architecture from tall glass buildings to more traditional Japanese riverside houses but one of the most interesting is the Akarenga red brick building around two kilometers up the river from the station. Standing strong since the early 20th century on one of the main roads through Morioka, this unique building was originally used to house the head office of the Iwate Bank. Designed by renowned architect Kingo Tatsuno who also designed Tokyo Station.

Crossing back over to the west side of Nakatsu River, you’ll come to one of the greenest areas in the city with a whole cluster of popular spots to visit. Morioka Castle Park and Uchimaru Ryokuchi Park are some of the most picturesque parts of the city which are ideal for a leisurely cycle around with a backdrop of vibrant colours which transform with the seasons. Don’t miss the peaceful ponds nestled beneath an umbrella of trees between the castle ruins and Uchimaru Ryokuchi Park.

All that cycling is bound to have you working up an appetite so get back on your bike just a short pedal down the road to the Shirasawa Senbei shop. Senbei are a ubiquitous Japanese snack made from rice and baked into a light, salty cracker. While shop bought senbei make a delicious treat, crunching down on a fresh rice cracker adds a whole new level to the experience. The senbei you can get your hands on at Shirasawa are particularly special mainly thanks to their variety of flavors. Pick from your standard soya senbei, a number of seeds, or even a sweet chocolate cracker.

Cycling a couple more kilometers across to the southeastern part of the city will bring you to Morioka Hachimangu Shrine. Housed in its own small park along with a couple of other shrines and the Moriokadashi Museum, the shrine was built for the God of War which made it a popular worshipping spot for the military in the past. The huge red torii gate protecting the shrine and the pretty streets around the area make it worth the visit.

Though following the main streets is certainly the best way to keep yourself orientated, if you’re not pushed for time don’t hesitate to go off the main roads where you can uncover quieter back streets, residential areas, and small, local eating establishments that promise to give you an even deeper understanding of the charming city of Morioka.
