The Kibiji is the best destination on two wheels. Here’s how to do it:

Start of at Bizen-Ichinomiya station, a mere 10 minutes from JR Okayama station. There’s a small rental bicycle shop next to this charming station. They offer several different rental plans, but we recommend you splurge for the 1000-yen variant, that gives you a bicycle for a full day, as well as being able to return it at Soja station, at the opposite end of the 17km trail.

Your first stop, Kibitsuhiko Shrine, is located a few minutes away. This is a beautiful shrine surrounded with a lovely garden, and is worth checking out, even though it pales in comparison with your next stop…

Kibitsu Shrine is the biggest and most important shrine in the region. We liked the 360m long wooden corridor, that leads across the temple grounds. This shrine is also one of the key places in the famous folk tale “Momotaro”, and there’s a small building covered with images depicting several of the key scenes of the story. While you’re here, also consider making a stop at the small souvenir shop and restaurant located next to the parking lot in front of the shrine. Their “Momotaro Udon” bowl comes highly recommended.

Continue across the vast plains, and you will eventually reach some impressive burial mounds, or “Kofun” which date back to the early days of Japan’s history. There are signboards in front some of them telling you more about their history, if you’re interested.

Your last stop will be the picturesque Kokubunji temple, located around 15 minutes from Soja, at the opposite end of the route. This temple is popular for its impressive five storied Pagoda, and the fact that it is surrounded by fields of flowers, making it a very photogenic spot at several times throughout the year. It is, of course, at its best during the cherry blossom season.
