In this article, we’ll introduce some of Tokyo’s best Japanese-style cafes for sampling traditional sweets.     Funabashiya Coredo Muromachi, Nihonbashi

    Situated inside the Coredo Muromachi shopping complex, Funabashiya is a modern branch of an Edo Period cafe that was founded by Kameido Tenjin. They're committed to all natural ingredients with no additives, and their specialty, Matcha Kuzumochi (arrowroot mochi with powdered matcha and soybean flour), are only available at the Coredo Muromachi branch.

    Funabashiya received the JR East Japan Souvenir Grand Prix in 2018, meaning they’re one of the best gifts you can purchase to share with family and friends back home.

    Funabashiya Coredo Muromachi is directly connected to the A6 Exit of the Mitsukoshimae subway station.

    Tsuruya Yoshinobu Tokyo Mise, Nihonbashi

    This traditional Japanese sweets shop was established in Kyoto more than 200 years ago, with their original taste having been passed down from generation to generation. The specialty here is Matcha with Seasonal Fresh Sweets, with the opportunity to see your sweets being made right before your very eyes in the Kayu-chaya annex. This is the first permanent space for sweets-making demonstrations in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area and a great place to observe the skillful techniques required.

    Black Bean Sweets Specialty Shop “Shiroikuro”, Azabujuban

    Just a stone’s throw from the Azabujuban shopping street, this famous sweets store is renowned for its use of black soybeans from Tamba in Hyōgo Prefecture. The specialty here is the Kuromame Shio-Daifuku (240 yen), mochi stuffed with a salted black soybean paste. You can choose between dine-in or takeaway and there’s a beautiful collection of Tamba-style pottery also for sale inside the store if you’re looking for a more permanent souvenir.

    Shiroikuro is a two-minute walk from Azabujuban subway station.

    Waguriya, Yanaka

    Waguriya is a specialty confectionary store that makes sweet treats using chestnuts grown on their own farm in Ibaraki Prefecture. The signature item on the menu is the Mont Blanc Dessert (850 yen), which is only available for eat-in (no takeaways) and is made fresh to order. It features strings of chestnut paste, soft cream and a layer of finely ground chestnuts atop a crumbly, biscuit base. This decadent dessert cannot be enjoyed outside of the Yanaka, so don’t miss your opportunity!

    Wagariyu is a five-minute walk from the Nippori railway station or three minutes from the Sendagi subway station.

    Opening hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (eat-in closes at 5:30 p.m. or as soon as the sweets are sold out). Closed on Mondays, except during busy periods in spring and autumn.
