도쿠가와 막부 직할의 왕실 영지로, 금화도 제조하였던 일본 최대의 금광. 1989년 자원고갈에 따라 조업을 정지하고, 400년 역사의 막을 내렸다. 부지내의 채굴시설 및 제련시설 등은 국가 중요문화재로 지정되어 있다. 현재는 '사도킨잔 에마키'에 그려진 에도시대 사도킨잔 금광 모습의 모형전시와, 실제 사용되었던 갱도 유적을 견학할 수 있다.
