창건은 1327년 교토의 덴류지 절과 세이호지 절 등을 돌보던 정원의 명인이자 승려인 무소 고쿠시에 의한다. 가마쿠라석의 암반에 커다란 석굴을 조각한 '덴뇨도 동굴'에서는 니카이도 단풍계곡을 배경으로 서원 정원 앞을 구성하는 차분한 돌정원을 조망할 수 있다. 이 '명승 즈이센지 정원'은 국가 특별 명승・명승으로 지정되어 있다. 가을 단풍철에는 절경.
