미나모토노 요리토모가 막부를 열기 이전의 어느날, 이나리 신(흰 여우)이 요리토모의 꿈에 나타나 적장 다이라 가문을 토벌할 시기를 알려주었다고 한다. 이에 따라 요리토모는 다이라 가문을 멸하고, 가마쿠라 막부를 열었다. 그후 이에 대한 고마움의 마음을 담아, 사스케 이나리진자 신사를 짓도록 하였다. 이 전설에 따라 사스케 이나리는 출세운과 사업운에 효험이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다.
